Celebrating Grant Recipients: Funding Success Stories Across Sectors

In the world of grants and funding, we often focus on the opportunities available. However, it's equally important to recognize and celebrate those who secure funding and the impactful projects they undertake. Let's spotlight recent recipients across various sectors and explore how these grants are making a difference.

Nonprofits: $800M to Support Homeless Veterans

The Department of Veterans Affairs has awarded over $800 million to 253 nonprofits to combat veteran homelessness. This substantial funding aims to support rapid rehousing efforts for veterans and prevent homelessness among low-income families.

Details:

  • $797.5 million allocated to the Supportive Services for Veteran Families Program

  • $8.9 million directed to the VA's Grants and Per Diem Program

  • Focus on specific groups such as women and elderly veterans

  • Aims to place 41,000 unhoused veterans into permanent housing

  • Connects an additional 40,000 veterans with supportive services

VA Secretary Denis McDonough emphasized, "We're making real progress in reducing Veteran homelessness, but there is much more work to do. These grants allow VA and the entire Biden-Harris Administration, alongside community partners, to provide more housing and wraparound services to more homeless and at-risk Veterans than ever before."

Startups: $200K for Innovative Cycle Safety Technology

The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded $200,000 to velo.ai, a Pittsburgh-based cycle safety startup, through the Complete Streets AI program. This funding will help inform cities on making streets safer for cyclists.

Key aspects of velo.ai's project:

  • AI-enabled sensors called Copilot detect potential collisions

  • Sensors gather valuable data for urban planning

  • Partnership with Carnegie Mellon University's Mobility Analytics Center

  • Collaboration with local bike share program POGOH

  • Support from various local organizations and institutions

Clark Haynes, founder of Velo AI, shared, "We've actually now generated more revenue using that [data] than our consumer side." The company plans to launch a redesigned version of their product in 2025, which will be "half the size and half the weight... smaller than a deck of cards, and we packed in a ton of intelligence."

These success stories highlight the diverse landscape of grant funding and its potential to drive innovation, support communities, and advance crucial research across various sectors. From addressing veteran homelessness and improving cycle safety to promoting digital equity, enhancing energy efficiency, and pushing the boundaries of scientific research, these grants demonstrate the transformative power of strategic investments.
