Tracking National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Passthrough Grants

Tracking National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Passthrough Grants

By Ryan Alcorn // October 9, 2023

The Federal Highway Administration's approval of state plans for electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure deployment marked a significant stride toward fostering a cleaner, more sustainable transportation landscape in the United States. Today, state governments are executing their plans – each at their own pace – to establish an interconnected network of EV charging infrastructure to facilitate access, reliability, and data collection. This article provides an overview of the current status of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program across each state.

Background

The $5 billion NEVI Program aims to offer dedicated funding to states for the strategic deployment of EV charging infrastructure. The program primarily directs funds towards the designated Alternative Fuel Corridors for electric vehicles, especially along the Interstate Highway System. Once the national network reaches completion, the funding can extend to any public road or other publicly accessible locations.

Key Stats

  • 10 states are actively soliciting applications (Arkansas, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Michigan, New Jersey, New Mexico, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia)

  • 4 states have awards pending (Utah, Rhode Island, Oklahoma, and Kansas)

  • 7 states have announced awards (Ohio, Hawaii, Maine, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Alaska, Kentucky)

  • Total funding for FY 2022: $615 million

  • Estimated funding for FY 2023: $885 million
