The Responsive Grant program from the Marillac Mission Fund provides biannual funding opportunities for nonprofit organizations that align with the Fund’s mission to support individuals experiencing poverty and vulnerability. The Fund prioritizes projects that preserve the dignity of individuals, especially those facing systemic barriers or hardship, through services and programs in specific focus areas. These areas include support for immigrants and refugees, older adults striving to live independently, rural well-being initiatives, and efforts toward human trafficking prevention (restricted to current grantees only). Additionally, advocacy and coalition-building projects are eligible if they support one of the four primary focus areas. Another focus area—improved economic mobility—is available only by invitation.
The Responsive Grants offer funding between $5,000 and $50,000. Applicants must be nonprofit organizations meeting Marillac Mission Fund’s eligibility criteria and fall within the stated program focus areas. Grant types available include program/project funding and general operating support. Program grants are intended for services with clearly defined outcomes that may continue beyond the grant term, while project grants are for time-limited, outcome-based undertakings. General operating support is typically not available for first-time grantees and requires that 100% of an organization’s programs fall within a selected focus area. These funds may be used flexibly by grantees throughout the grant year in support of their broader mission.
A streamlined version of the Responsive application is available to small organizations with a current fiscal year budget under $500,000 or that are entirely volunteer-led. These applicants can still request funding within the standard range of $5,000 to $50,000 but are eligible to complete an abbreviated form accessible through the grantee portal.
The application process begins with a review of eligibility and program alignment. All applications are submitted through a secure online portal, and organizations must create an account before applying. Submissions must include a compelling case for support, clearly defined objectives, and a demonstration of anticipated impact. A preview of the application form and guidance on creating a strong proposal are provided to assist applicants in completing their submissions.
Applications for the current grant cycle open on December 15 and are due by February 1 at 11:59 PM. Award notifications are typically issued by the end of April. To remain eligible for funding, current or previous grantees must submit and receive approval for a final status report from any prior grants. Questions can be directed to the Marillac Mission Fund via phone at (314) 733-6500.
