Futures Fund Grant
This funding opportunity supports innovative visual artists in the St. Louis region to create impactful projects that address societal issues and promote equity and sustainability.
The Futures Fund is an annual grant initiative operated by The Luminary, a St. Louis-based arts organization, in partnership with the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Since its launch in 2019, the Futures Fund has been a part of the Regional Regranting Program—a national effort that supports independent, artist-led initiatives through localized funding. The Warhol Foundation's Regional Regranting Program currently spans 36 partner organizations across the U.S. and Puerto Rico, each tailoring support to meet the specific needs of their local artistic communities. This decentralized model has, over a decade, distributed more than $4.7 million to over 1,000 projects, emphasizing the value of grassroots, community-embedded creativity. The Futures Fund specifically serves the St. Louis region, providing financial support to innovative, experimental, and community-engaged projects. It awards grants ranging from $2,500 to $8,000 to individuals and collectives within a 40-mile radius of downtown St. Louis. Projects are selected based on criteria such as originality, potential impact, and alignment with principles of equity, sustainability, and accessibility. The Fund seeks to nurture initiatives that push boundaries, engage the public, and respond to contemporary social and cultural issues. Funding from the Futures Fund can be used to support a wide range of visual arts-related activities. Eligible projects include public art installations, socially engaged practices, collaborative art spaces, publications, mutual aid initiatives, alternative education projects, and more. All projects must have a public-facing component and be visibly rooted in the visual arts. Projects organized solely for the benefit of a private studio practice or those hosted by incorporated entities like nonprofits, religious institutions, or universities are not eligible unless the project is distinctly independent from the institution’s programming. The 2026 application cycle—Cycle 8—opens on March 10 and closes on May 5. Interested applicants are encouraged to attend an in-person info session on March 24 or a virtual session on April 9 to gain insight into the program. Applications must clearly articulate the project's scope, goals, and viability. The review process places strong emphasis on community engagement, experimentation, and long-term visibility within the regional arts ecosystem. Approximately 75% of awarded funds will be disbursed by the end of May 2026. Grant recipients will be publicly announced in mid-June 2026 during a community celebration. All funded projects must begin between June 1, 2026, and May 31, 2027. Recipients will be expected to participate in a review and reflection process by March 2027 to evaluate project outcomes. The grant funds may be used to pay artist fees and stipends, acquire equipment, and support web-based components of the project, as long as these expenses are aligned with the project’s stated public and artistic aims. The Futures Fund’s mission is to catalyze new ways of artmaking, organizing, and thinking. It responds directly to the diminishing availability of direct arts funding by empowering local artists to shape the cultural landscape of their region. Through its strategic support of creative initiatives, the Fund envisions a more equitable and expansive artistic future for the St. Louis region and contributes to a broader national movement of grassroots cultural development.
