Grant Description

The American Association of University Women (AAUW), established in 1881, is a leading private organization committed to advancing equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research. The AAUW has a long history of providing fellowships and grants to support academic and professional opportunities for women. Among its distinguished offerings is the American Short-Term Research Publication Grants program, which aims to promote gender equity in higher education by increasing the number of women with academic tenure. The grant is part of the broader American Fellowships initiative, which began in 1888 and is recognized as the oldest non-institutional source of graduate and postdoctoral funding for women in the United States. The American Short-Term Research Publication Grants provide financial support to women in academia to prepare research manuscripts for publication. The program encourages applications from all academic fields, with a strong emphasis on candidates involved in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), or gender-related research. The primary objective of this grant is to facilitate the preparation of high-quality academic manuscripts, supporting activities such as drafting, editing, modifying, replicating research, and addressing reviewer feedback to enhance the likelihood of successful publication. Awardees must be listed as the sole author, first author, or an author of equivalent significance on the intended publication. Each grant provides $8,000 in a single payment at the start of the grant term. These funds may be used for activities directly related to manuscript preparation, as well as for living expenses incurred during the grant period, including housing and dependent care. However, funds may not be used for fieldwork, equipment purchases, assistant salaries, institutional overhead, or tuition for dependents. Importantly, the grant does not cover expenses incurred outside the defined award term. Tax liability for the award depends on the recipient’s usage and personal tax status, and AAUW does not provide tax advice. Eligibility is limited to individuals who identify as women and hold an eligible terminal degree—such as a Ph.D., Ed.D., J.D., M.F.A., or M.D.—at the time of application. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Ineligible applicants include tenured professors, current AAUW employees, board members, and past recipients of national AAUW fellowships or grants (except Community Action Grants or local awards). Applicants for another national AAUW grant in the same year are also ineligible. Applications are evaluated on scholarly excellence, originality, manuscript feasibility, teaching experience, and commitment to supporting women and girls. Preference is given to applicants working in STEM or gender studies, those who have overcome significant life challenges, first-generation college graduates, and individuals from single-parent households. The 2025–2026 application window is open from August 1, 2025, to September 30, 2025. Applicants will be notified of award status by April 15, 2026. Grant funds will be disbursed between July and September 2026, with the formal grant term running from July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2027. A final report is due by July 15, 2027. The application must include a narrative proposal, two letters of recommendation, proof of degree, and an official transcript. Certified translations are required for non-English documents. All required documents must be submitted by the application deadline, and incomplete applications will be reviewed at AAUW’s discretion. Applications are reviewed by expert panels in arts and humanities, social sciences, and the natural and physical sciences. AAUW’s Fellowships & Grants team first screens applications for completeness and eligibility. Awards are based on recommendations from the review panels, subject to final approval by AAUW. Grantees are expected to remain committed to the proposed manuscript and must not pursue any degree program during the grant term. Any changes to the original manuscript plan may result in disqualification. For further information, applicants may contact AAUW at 1310 L Street NW, Suite 1000, Washington, DC 20005, or by phone at 202-785-7700.
