Grant Description

The Watchable Wildlife Grants are administered by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and funded through the Nebraska Wildlife Conservation Fund. These grants aim to foster public appreciation and stewardship of Nebraska's natural resources by supporting projects that enhance wildlife viewing and nature-based experiences across the state. By encouraging engagement with nature, the program seeks to build a deeper public connection to conservation efforts and wildlife awareness. Applications for the current cycle are open from August 4 to October 3, 2025, with a hard submission deadline at 5 p.m. Central Time on October 3. All proposals will be reviewed by the Nebraska Watchable Wildlife Committee, with award announcements expected in late November to early December 2025. All funded projects must be completed by May 4, 2026, including submission of final reports and invoices. These grants are structured as reimbursements and require submission of receipts, a final report, and documentation of a 25% match, which may include in-kind contributions. Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations, government entities, individuals, and for-profit organizations, provided the project is not designed solely for profit. Projects should primarily focus on developing or improving opportunities for wildlife observation, particularly those with a positive impact on both wildlife and their habitats. Examples include developing viewing infrastructure, interpretive signage, wildlife events, and other forms of public engagement. However, completed projects, computers, software, and repeat-funded proposals are not eligible. Each application must include a Project Narrative Sheet, Budget Sheet, and a detailed project timeline. Applications will be evaluated based on several criteria: the project's value for wildlife observation, educational outreach, potential for broad participation, community integration, novelty, and long-term sustainability. Successful projects often include partnerships and demonstrate how the initiative will endure beyond the grant period. Applicants must also complete a required environmental review before initiating work. While there is no email confirmation of application receipt, applicants should prepare thoroughly before submission, as post-submission edits are not allowed. Final project selection depends on alignment with ranking criteria, readiness for implementation, and the extent to which the proposal contributes to public appreciation of Nebraska’s natural environment. Questions about eligibility or project alignment with the grant’s objectives can be directed to the Watchable Wildlife Biologist, who is available to advise prospective applicants. All funded projects must acknowledge the support of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and the Nebraska Wildlife Conservation Fund when relevant.
