Grant Description

The Alexandria “Difference Maker” Grants are offered by the Alexandria Area Community Foundation (AACF), an organization operating under CommunityGiving. AACF seeks to fund initiatives that produce meaningful change within the Alexandria area, specifically Douglas County, Minnesota. With a strong focus on community partnerships, the Foundation emphasizes leadership and collaboration that extend beyond financial contributions to foster sustainable progress. This grant supports a broad range of activities, including capital projects, new or expanded initiatives, general operations, and other strategic investments expected to have a long-term impact. Projects should serve the residents of Douglas County and must be implemented by eligible entities, including 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, schools, or government bodies. Funding amounts range between $5,000 and $30,000, and grant awards are made within 90 days of the submission deadline. Grant funding will be prioritized in five key focus areas: education, especially early childhood through 12th grade and after-school programming; social services aimed at addressing basic needs and supporting youth and families; health, including both physical and mental wellness, as well as abuse and violence prevention; arts and culture that promote diversity and enhance cultural life; and civic initiatives that strengthen and preserve community integrity. Applications that are collaborative, innovative, and have the potential to inspire additional investment are looked upon favorably. Specific qualities encouraged include community connectedness, cross-generational or cross-cultural impact, and alignment with diversity, equity, and inclusion principles. Projects that are highly visible and capable of sparking further community engagement are particularly desirable. There are several ineligible funding areas, including individuals, religious or political endeavors, scholarships, endowments, previously completed projects, travel or conference expenses, and those seeking to replace lost government funding. The application process requires online submission via the CommunityGiving Grant Management System. Selected proposals are reviewed by the Grant Advisory Committee and approved by the AACF Board of Directors. Grants are disbursed once the Grant Agreement is signed electronically, and recipients must later submit a Final Report. A Progress Report may also be required. The application period for 2025 opens on May 1 and closes at 11:59 PM on June 30. All communications are conducted via email, and inquiries about the application or system can be directed to (320) 257-9715. The foundation’s main office is located in St. Cloud, Minnesota, and general questions can also be addressed by calling (320) 253-4380.
