Grant Description

The 2025 Capacity Building Grants are administered by the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines with the intent to support nonprofit organizations in enhancing their internal capacity. These grants are designed to strengthen governance, leadership, internal management, and strategic planning in nonprofit organizations operating within Greater Des Moines. By fostering more resilient and mission-driven nonprofits, the Community Foundation aims to ensure a healthier, more vibrant community ecosystem. This funding opportunity is specifically focused on projects that build core organizational strength. Acceptable initiatives include strategic planning and visioning, succession and talent pipeline planning, financial scenario or business planning for organizational stability, and the development of fund development or marketing strategies. However, feasibility studies are not supported. The grant is explicitly not intended for ongoing operational expenses, capital infrastructure, religious programming promoting a specific faith, or technical purchases like hardware and software. Applicants may request up to $7,500 in funding. The application process is ongoing, with proposals accepted on a rolling basis and decisions typically rendered within 10 business days. Prior to applying, organizations are encouraged to consult with a member of the Community Impact Team. This consultation aims to determine alignment between the proposed project and the grant’s objectives, and to discuss budget, consultants, and work plans. Applicants are also encouraged to submit a draft of their application to receive feedback before submitting the final version through the “Manage My Grants” portal. To begin the application process, organizations must contact Jenny McCloud to schedule an initial conversation. From there, they will meet with the team, submit a draft application for review, and then complete the official application. Required documents include a detailed project budget outlining other funding sources and commitments, a board of directors list, and a consultant work plan if applicable. Questions regarding the program can be directed to Ellie Burns, Senior Director of Nonprofit Relations, via email at burns@desmoinesfoundation.org or by phone at (515) 883-2629. Projects better suited for strategic collaboration across organizations or those not fitting the described capacity-building criteria should consider applying for the separate Strategic Alignment Grant or explore support through GIVEdsm.
