Grant Description

The National Grassroots Organizing Program is a grant initiative focused on empowering community-led groups working at the intersections of social and environmental justice across the United States and its territories. Administered by the Ben & Jerry’s Foundation, the program draws inspiration from the values of equity, activism, and participatory leadership. The grant emphasizes the principle that those directly affected by systemic injustice are best positioned to lead transformative change in their communities. This program offers two-year general operating support grants to grassroots organizations that utilize collective-action organizing as a primary strategy. Each selected organization can receive up to $30,000 annually, with an average grant size of $20,000 per year. Eligible applicants must have an annual operating budget under $350,000, operate within the U.S. or its territories, and be either a 501(c)(3) nonprofit or have a fiscal sponsor with such status. Organizations must demonstrate constituent leadership and the capacity to organize around issues that impact them directly. The grant is intended to support a range of grassroots organizing efforts, including but not limited to leadership development, coalition-building, campaign planning, and non-violent direct action. The program does not fund direct service organizations, government entities, individuals, educational institutions, or those with an international scope. It is also not intended for capital campaigns, litigation, or electoral activities. Applicants begin by completing an Eligibility Questionnaire to determine alignment with the program’s goals. If eligible, they can register and submit their application through the Foundation's online portal. The Foundation does not accept mailed or emailed letters of interest or applications. After submission, organizations may be invited for a video conversation with the Foundation’s Grantmaking Committee, which consists of Ben & Jerry’s employees who meet regularly to review applications. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year. Although there are no fixed deadlines, the 2025 grant cycle opened on November 1, 2024, and organizations can apply at any time. Each organization may only receive one grant per calendar year. All applications must be submitted online, and selected applicants will be notified through the grant portal. Denied applicants will also receive a response with reasons for denial, and in most cases, are asked to wait one year before reapplying. For inquiries or technical support, applicants can contact Dana Jeffery by phone at 802-495-1378 or via email at [email protected] during standard business hours, Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm Eastern Time.
