Upstate Community Grants Program
This grant provides funding to organizations, community groups, and schools in Upstate South Carolina for projects that protect and educate about native plants and ecosystems.
The Upstate Community Grants Program, administered by the Upstate Chapter of the South Carolina Native Plant Society (SCNPS), supports community-based efforts to protect, restore, and educate about native plant species and ecosystems. The program is aligned with the SCNPS mission to “Protect & Restore” native plant heritage and “Educate” local communities about the value of native flora. Eligible applicants include organizations, community groups, and schools operating in the designated Upstate counties of South Carolina. Projects must focus on native plant protection, restoration, public education, or the removal of exotic and invasive species. Priority is given to projects that serve public spaces, places of cultural significance, rare species preservation, and educational efforts. Funds may not be used on private property for personal gain, but all applicants must demonstrate the organizational capacity and long-term plan for sustaining the project. The maximum typical award amount is $1,000, although larger grants may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis with no fixed deadline. Grants will be awarded until funding is exhausted. Each proposal must include a project description, timeline, budget, maintenance plan, and letters of support from any landowners or partners. Projects must begin within one year of funding and be completed within two years. Applicants are limited to one application per fiscal year. SCNPS encourages early applications and is available to consult with potential applicants before submission. All inquiries should be directed to the program contact via email.
