Holohil Grant Program
This program provides radio telemetry equipment to conservation researchers worldwide, focusing on projects that promote scientific research and conservation efforts, particularly for underrepresented species and in remote areas.
For over four decades, Holohil Systems Ltd. has been a trusted supplier of wildlife tracking solutions, especially in the area of conservation and endangered species research. Based in Carp, Ontario, Holohil has supported global conservation efforts by donating radio transmitters to researchers and agencies focused primarily on bats and raptors. In 2016, the company formally established the Holohil Grant Program (HGP) to institutionalize this support and extend it to a broader range of species, especially those that have been historically underrepresented in conservation science. The Holohil Grant Program seeks to support research projects that integrate the use of Holohil transmitters as a critical data collection tool. Projects must demonstrate scientific merit, a sound research design, and a clear conservation impact. Preference is given to studies that aim to advance knowledge about lesser-known species, enhance public engagement—particularly with youth—and offer conservation education. Holohil emphasizes minimal administrative burden for applicants and requires only a succinct proposal and post-award project update, including photos, which are shared publicly to promote global conservation efforts. Each quarter, Holohil awards up to CAD$2,500 worth of transmitters per project and covers the shipping costs to grantees. However, recipients are responsible for any importation duties or taxes. Applications are accepted from around the world and evaluated by a review committee consisting of scientists, biologists, conservation professionals, and Holohil staff who are experts in transmitter applications. Applications are reviewed against criteria including need, design feasibility, public outreach, scientific contribution, urgency, and potential for future research or outreach. The application process is intentionally streamlined. Interested applicants download and complete the HGP application form, limited to 500 words, and submit it via email to [email protected]. Applications exceeding one page or 500 words are not accepted. Submission deadlines fall on January 15, April 15, July 15, and October 15, with notifications sent by March 1, June 1, September 1, and December 1 respectively. Only winning applicants are contacted directly, and results are also posted on Holohil’s website and social media. As part of its commitment to sustainability, Holohil encourages researchers to donate unused transmitters, which can be refurbished and redistributed to other deserving projects. Additionally, award recipients are required to submit a short (approx. 500-word) final report and photos demonstrating the use of transmitters. These updates not only help promote global conservation work but also serve as a valuable record of scientific progress supported by Holohil. The Holohil Grant Program remains open to both scientists and non-scientists from any country. Holohil encourages applications from individuals and organizations who can demonstrate the feasibility of their project and the relevance of Holohil’s technology to their conservation efforts. Importantly, researchers may apply multiple times across quarters for different projects, though only one application per project is permitted per quarter.
