The Neighbor to Neighbor (N2N) program is a grassroots grantmaking initiative under Seattle Foundation's Core Programs, established in 1991. Its mission is to address racial and economic inequities by supporting projects that increase community engagement, empowerment, and influence among residents most affected by these disparities. Operating within specific areas of King County—South Seattle, White Center, Kent, and SeaTac/Tukwila—N2N targets small, community-based organizations with annual budgets under $200,000 that are led by and for the communities they serve.
Administered by Seattle Foundation and guided by an advisory committee of community members, funders, and partners, N2N awards grants of up to $7,500. These grants are not intended for general operations, direct social service delivery, or one-time events, but rather for projects that are community-led and strategically focused on long-term systemic change. Projects must demonstrate alignment with the Foundation’s values of equity, opportunity, and collective community empowerment.
To be eligible, applicants must have a completed Org Profile Form submitted within the last five months and must comply with the Foundation’s anti-discrimination and anti-hate standards. Organizations may apply once per calendar year. Those without 501(c)(3) status may apply using a fiscal sponsor with appropriate tax-exempt status and documentation. Tribal applicants are also eligible, provided they submit a letter of support from tribal leadership.
Applications are accepted and reviewed quarterly, with deadlines on January 30, April 30, July 30, and October 30. Applicants are encouraged to consult with program consultant Aileen Balahadia (a.balahadia@seattlefoundation.org) prior to submission to assess alignment. The application includes narrative responses regarding the proposed project, community served, engagement strategy, partners, and budget narrative. Required uploads include fiscal sponsor letters, 501(c)(3) determination letters, and leadership or board member information.
Evaluations are conducted by the N2N Advisory Committee, and awards are typically made following each quarterly deadline. Projects are expected to be completed within one year. With its commitment to racial equity, N2N continues to serve as a vital support structure for community-led organizations striving to create systemic change in Greater Seattle.
