The Hanover Life Squad Fund was established in 1999 to continue the mission of the Hanover Life Squad after it ceased operations following 26 years of service. This fund was initiated by Joseph B. Pater, then-owner of Kellin, Inc. and the last original squad member still active at the time of its closure. He collaborated with Dennis Byrd, Marcia Roemer, Janet Pater, and Tim Roemer to form a board that would oversee the fund’s mission and activities.
The purpose of the Hanover Life Squad Fund is to support local fire departments and emergency medical services (EMS) operating in Butler County, Ohio. The fund honors the legacy of the original life squad by providing financial resources for public safety organizations that continue to protect and serve the community. Grants are primarily intended to support operational needs such as equipment acquisition, personnel costs, training programs, and essential supplies.
Grants range from $500 to $10,000 and are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year. There is a strong encouragement for applicants to secure matching funds for the amount they are requesting. While matching is not mandatory, it is highly favored and may influence the funding decision.
Eligibility is limited to tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, as recognized by the IRS. The grant is not available to individuals. Geographic eligibility focuses on Butler County, Ohio, with priority given to applications from Hanover, Reily, Oxford, and Ross Townships. Organizations that have previously received funding must submit a completed Grant Outcome Evaluation Report before they can be considered for new grants.
Applications must be submitted online through the Hamilton Community Foundation’s portal. No paper applications are accepted. For inquiries, applicants may contact Tracy Eads, Community Investment Officer, by phone at 513-863-1717 or via email at info@hamiltonfoundation.org. There is no fixed deadline, allowing eligible organizations to apply as needs arise.
