Aquatic Invasive Species Control in Connecticut
This program provides competitive funding to municipalities, state agencies, and nonprofit organizations in Connecticut to combat and educate the public about the impacts of harmful aquatic invasive species in local waterways.
The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) is accepting proposals for the 2025 Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Grant Program through December 6, 2024. This program, funded by fees from the AIS Stamp established by Public Act 19-190, provides competitive grants to municipalities, state agencies, and nonprofit organizations. Since its inception in 2019, approximately $1.5 million has been awarded to 59 projects aimed at mitigating the impacts of aquatic invasive species in Connecticut's inland water bodies. AIS, such as hydrilla and zebra mussels, pose significant threats to freshwater ecosystems and recreational activities like boating, fishing, and swimming. These invasive species outcompete native flora and fauna, and their dense growth can impede waterway use. The AIS Grant Program supports efforts to control these species and promote education to prevent their spread, preserving the environmental and economic benefits of Connecticut’s waterways. Eligible projects may include research, control programs, and educational initiatives to address AIS impacts. DEEP emphasizes the importance of boater compliance with Connecticut laws requiring the inspection and removal of vegetation and AIS from vessels and trailers before and after launch to reduce the risk of spreading these species. Violations can result in fines up to $100 per occurrence. Significant changes to the AIS Stamp system take effect on October 1, 2024, following Public Act 23-154. DEEP now collects AIS Stamp fees directly, requiring either a $7 Individual AIS Stamp or a $20 Vessel AIS Decal for operation on inland waters. Decals must be permanently affixed to vessels and purchased via the Online Sportsmen Licensing System. Fines of $85 apply to individuals operating without the required stamp or decal. More information is available on DEEP's AIS Stamp FAQ website. For application details, visit the DEEP AIS Grant Program website.
