Switzer Research Fellowships Program
This program provides funding for researchers to conduct innovative studies that improve the lives of people with disabilities, particularly focusing on diverse populations and community participation.
The Switzer Research Fellowships Program, managed by the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR), offers funding to support high-quality research that advances knowledge and methods for improving outcomes for people with disabilities. The program is designed to foster original research within the domains of community living and participation, health and function, and employment. Emphasis is placed on research that incorporates racial and ethnic diversity in study populations and includes investigators from underrepresented communities in the extramural scientific workforce. Two fellowship categories are available: Merit Fellowships for early-career researchers with advanced professional training and Distinguished Fellowships for individuals with seven or more years of relevant research experience and a doctorate or equivalent qualifications. Applicants must propose projects aligned with NIDILRR’s research priorities, as outlined in its Long-Range Plan for Fiscal Years 2024–2028. U.S. citizens and non-citizens who can provide documentation of their eligibility to receive federal research funding may apply, but all projects must be completed within a one-year timeframe. The program anticipates awarding up to six grants with funding ranging from $80,000 to $90,000, depending on fellowship type. Applications are due February 3, 2025, and must be submitted electronically via Grants.gov. An optional letter of intent is encouraged by January 8, 2025, to aid in planning the review process. An informational conference call for potential applicants will be held on January 6, 2025. Late submissions or applications exceeding the funding or duration limits will not be reviewed. Proposals must include a comprehensive project narrative of up to 24 double-spaced pages, addressing criteria such as the applicant’s education and research experience, the importance and design of the proposed research, and the availability of necessary resources. Supporting documents include a work plan, data management plan, and references. Applications involving human subjects must comply with federal regulations, including institutional review board (IRB) approvals if necessary. Applications will be reviewed by a peer panel, with up to 100 points allocated based on the applicant's qualifications, project significance, methodology, and potential impact. The final award decisions will consider panel rankings, cost reasonableness, and the likelihood of achieving expected benefits. Recipients must comply with reporting requirements, including performance and financial reports, and make their data and publications publicly accessible as part of the ACL's Public Access Plan. Successful applicants will be notified with a Notice of Award by the anticipated start date of September 1, 2025. Applicants and their collaborators are encouraged to ensure their compliance with all administrative and national policy requirements, including proper use of federal funds and adherence to anti-discrimination laws. This program supports individual researchers in advancing scientific inquiry and improving the lives of individuals with disabilities.
