Grant Description

The National Institutes of Health (NIH), through the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), has issued a forecast for the upcoming Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) titled β€œCore Centers for Clinical Research (CCCR) (P30 Clinical Trial Not Allowed).” The anticipated NOFO aims to advance the methodological sciences supporting clinical research in the areas of musculoskeletal, rheumatic, and skin diseases. This initiative is intended to fund centers that will not engage in clinical trials or the generation of biological or genetic data, nor in the development of associated technologies. The primary purpose of these centers is to address major gaps in clinical research by developing innovative methods, metrics, and outcome measures. These efforts are to be grounded in patient and community needs, with inclusive participation at every stage of the research process. Applicants are encouraged to form multidisciplinary collaborations that combine methodological innovation with clinical insight into NIAMS-related conditions. A robust Methodologic Core is a required component of each center, and applicants may also propose a modest Administrative Core and optional Resource Cores, depending on their institutional and project needs. The CCCRs are positioned to play a strategic role in improving the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of relevant conditions by enhancing the rigor, reproducibility, and impact of clinical research. Investigators with expertise across clinical and methodological fields are particularly encouraged to consider applying, with sufficient lead time provided to allow for the formation of impactful collaborations. Eligibility for the anticipated NOFO includes a wide range of entities such as state and county governments, public housing authorities, public and private higher education institutions, nonprofit organizations, tribal organizations (both federally recognized and not), independent school districts, and both for-profit and small business entities. Matching funds are not required for this grant opportunity. While this is a forecast and not yet an active funding opportunity, potential applicants are advised of key estimated dates. The NOFO is expected to be posted by May 25, 2026, with an application due date of September 25, 2026. Awards are projected to be made by July 1, 2027, with funded projects beginning on the same date. These estimates are provided to encourage early planning and collaboration.
