PNET Pathway Grant Program
This program provides $75,000 in funding for researchers focused on advancing the understanding and treatment of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors, encouraging collaboration among U.S.-based academic and research institutions.
The PNET Pathway Grant Program is an initiative of the Hirshberg Foundation, aimed at advancing research in pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNETs), a subtype of pancreatic cancer that has distinct biological and clinical characteristics. Building on the rigorous standards and scientific rigor established in the Foundation’s Seed Grant and Catalyst Grant programs, this grant targets the acceleration of treatment development by funding research that enhances understanding of PNET biology and improves diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. The overarching goal of the program is to grow and strengthen the national community of investigators focused on PNETs. It seeks to support innovative projects that exhibit high scientific merit and translational potential. The program encourages collaboration among leading institutions while maintaining a single principal investigator (PI) model. Multi-PI applications are not accepted, although collaborative efforts between labs and institutions are encouraged. For early-career applicants without independent research programs, the program requires the inclusion of a senior mentor with a background in pancreatic cancer, preferably PNET-focused. Eligible applicants include faculty members (both research- and clinical-track), staff scientists, and postdoctoral trainees affiliated with U.S.-based academic or research institutions. The grant offers $75,000 in direct funding for a one-year project. No indirect costs are provided, and mentors are not eligible for salary support. However, a no-cost extension of one year may be requested if needed. The review process is managed by a three-member scientific panel consisting of members from the Foundation’s Scientific Advisory Board or approved external reviewers with appropriate expertise. Final funding decisions are made by the Foundation’s leadership team. Applications must be submitted by May 15, 2026, with funding notifications expected by July 30, 2026. Projects may begin as early as September 1, 2026. Application materials must be compiled into a single PDF and include a cover page with institutional approval, a 300-word abstract, a three-page research plan, relevant ethical assurances, biosketches for both the applicant and mentor (if applicable), and a budget justification. Additional required materials include a high-resolution headshot and a two-paragraph lay summary, both to be used for public-facing communications if the award is granted. Recipients are expected to submit progress reports as detailed in the Grant Agreement and to present their research at the Foundation’s annual research forum at the end of the award term. These reporting requirements ensure accountability and help integrate grantee findings into the broader community of pancreatic cancer research. The PNET Pathway Grant Program reinforces the Hirshberg Foundation’s role as a leader in fostering research across multiple forms of pancreatic cancer, providing essential resources for scientific discovery and patient impact.
