Grant Description

The Upper Peninsula Power Company (UPPCO) operates a community-focused donations and sponsorships program designed to strengthen the quality of life in the communities it serves. As a regional energy provider, UPPCO supports nonprofit organizations across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, directing resources to initiatives that align with its five key focus areas: Arts & Culture, Community Development, Education, Environment, and Health & Human Services. The company emphasizes that funds are exclusively intended for nonprofit organizations operating within UPPCO’s service area. No operational budget funds are used for these charitable purposes; instead, contributions are made from UPPCO's profits and from employee-driven campaigns such as those coordinated with the United Way. Each month, UPPCO’s internal committee reviews eligible requests. Only applications submitted via their official online portal are considered; emailed or mailed submissions are ineligible. For a request to be considered, applicants must include complete organizational and project details, including contact information, project goals, a full budget, the nature and amount of funding sought, and plans for recognizing UPPCO’s support. A completed IRS W-9 form is required for all organizations selected for funding. Following approval, UPPCO may conduct follow-ups, including site visits or interviews with program managers, especially for grants over $1,000. Organizations receiving such funding may be required to submit a brief outcomes report, which may include photographs and documentation of results. The scope of funding is targeted but flexible within the defined priority areas. Eligible arts projects may include theater productions, museum exhibitions, or musical performances, while community development funds might support local business associations, civic initiatives, or infrastructure projects. Education grants may be used for literacy programs, school readiness efforts, vocational training, and STEM education. Environmental funding encourages responsible natural resource use and may cover recycling programs, wildlife conservation, and energy efficiency initiatives. In the area of health and human services, UPPCO supports efforts promoting wellness, recreation, and services for vulnerable populations, including seniors and individuals with disabilities. Notably, the program does not fund individuals, private companies, operational costs like salaries or utility bills, political or religious organizations, or travel expenses. Projects must demonstrate a clear public benefit and fall within the geographic limits of UPPCO’s service area. Funding is not available for construction-related work or for national/international organizations without a local impact. This ensures all resources directly benefit the people and communities within the region UPPCO serves. One of the key pillars of the program is its transparency and consistent process. All applicants must use the online submission portal at https://www.uppco.com/community/helping-our-community/, and no exceptions are made for alternative formats. The review process is handled with integrity, and UPPCO may reach out for additional documentation or clarification. Evaluation appears to be based on alignment with focus areas, community impact, financial clarity, and feasibility. Additional initiatives include the “Dollars for Doers” program, which provides employees and retirees with the opportunity to earn up to $300 in donations annually for a nonprofit where they volunteer. This deepens UPPCO’s engagement with community-based organizations and reflects the company’s commitment to service both financially and personally. Annual deadlines for volunteer-based funding submissions fall on December 31 of each calendar year.
