The FY26 Indian Highway Safety Grant Opportunities program, administered by the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services Indian Highway Safety Program, provides financial assistance grants to federally recognized tribes under the authority of the Highway Safety Act of 1966 (U.S.C. Title 23, Section 402). These grants aim to reduce traffic crashes, fatalities, injuries, and property damage in tribal communities by enhancing traffic safety enforcement and child safety seat programs. All grant opportunities under this program are reimbursable and performance-based.
The primary objective of the Indian Highway Safety grants is to support tribes in improving traffic law enforcement, occupant protection measures, and highway safety through specialized initiatives. Specifically, the grants address critical traffic safety needs, support enforcement campaigns, and fund educational programs to enhance road safety outcomes in Indian Country. Eligible grant categories include funding for the Lifesavers Conference Grant, Occupant Protection Grant, and Law Enforcement Grant.
Eligible applicants for these grant opportunities are limited to federally recognized tribes. The program is specifically designed for tribal employees actively engaged in traffic-related safety roles, including law enforcement officers and highway safety specialists. Participation in the Indian Highway Safety Tribal Grants training session is highly recommended for tribes planning to apply for FY26 funding. This training will cover federal regulations, grant application requirements, problem identification strategies, data collection, and submission processes.
The Indian Highway Safety Tribal Grants session will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach, California. To attend, participants must register for the Lifesavers Conference and submit an Indian Highway Safety Lifesavers Conference Grant application via Grants.gov under the opportunity number BIA-IHSP-2025-001. The registration and travel expenses for attendees from federally recognized tribes will be covered by grant awards.
Applications for all grant opportunities must be submitted no later than February 10, 2025. Additional grant opportunities include the Occupant Protection Grant (BIA-IHSP-2025-002) and the Law Enforcement Grant (BIA-IHSP-2025-003).
