Visionary Grants
This funding opportunity supports graduate students and early career researchers in developing innovative psychological projects that address critical social issues affecting vulnerable populations.
The APF Visionary Grants, sponsored by the American Psychological Foundation (APF), aim to foster innovation through funding research, education, and intervention projects that utilize psychological science to address pressing social issues. The initiative supports early-stage, high-impact efforts that can serve as models for broader replication or further funding. These grants are intended to catalyze innovation and serve as a springboard for larger-scale support from federal or private sources. The program focuses on several priority areas where psychology can drive societal improvement. These include applying psychological insights to benefit at-risk or vulnerable populations, such as individuals with serious mental illness, returning military personnel, incarcerated individuals, and those facing economic hardship. Additional focal points include violence prevention, exploring the link between behavior and health outcomes such as wellness, obesity, or diabetes, and addressing stigma and prejudice related to race, gender, sexual orientation, age, religion, socioeconomic status, and disability. Notably, a specific grant in the 2026 cycle will be dedicated to advancing racial equity, with funding from the APA's fund at the Tides Foundation. The grants are particularly suited for pilot and demonstration projects that, if proven effective, have the potential for scale or adaptation in other geographic or institutional settings. Preference is given to initiatives that exhibit both innovation and promise for broad applicability. APF values projects that introduce new interventions or substantially enhance existing ones, rather than incremental work with limited replication potential. Eligibility for the Visionary Grants is limited to graduate students and early career researchers within ten years of receiving their doctoral degree. Applicants must be affiliated with educational or scientific institutions, nonprofit organizations, or governmental bodies operating exclusively for educational and charitable purposes. Demonstrated capability to execute the proposed project is a requirement. APF encourages applicants from diverse demographic and geographic backgrounds and accepts international applicants from countries with diplomatic relations with the United States, provided all application materials are submitted in English. Applications must include a detailed project proposal, a timeline, a comprehensive budget with justification, the applicant's CV, and an IRS determination letter for nonprofit-affiliated applicants. Evaluations are based on the project's potential impact, methodological clarity, funding criticality, and overall viability. Projects deemed as minor variations of existing work or those that should be supported under other existing funding mechanisms are generally discouraged. Submissions are made via the GivingData platform, which provides full application guidelines upon account creation or login. Although assistance is available through APF’s Programs team, applicants are advised that the foundation does not provide feedback on proposals. Applications for the 2026 grant cycle must be submitted by April 3, 2026.
