Doree Taylor Charitable Foundation Grant
This grant provides funding to nonprofit organizations in Maine that address basic human needs, promote humane animal care, expand healthcare access for underserved populations, and support public media initiatives.
The Doree Taylor Charitable Foundation is a philanthropic trust managed by the Massachusetts office of Bank of America Private Bank’s Philanthropic Solutions. This foundation operates under the guidance of the bank’s MA-based discretionary grantmaking team and is one of many foundations for which Bank of America serves as trustee or co-trustee. It supports nonprofit initiatives that align with its established mission to serve under-resourced populations and causes across the state of Maine. The foundation primarily aims to support charitable organizations engaged in meeting basic human needs, promoting the humane care of animals, expanding healthcare access for the underserved, and supporting public media. The foundation's funding priorities center around four core focus areas: relief to people in need (such as food, housing, and shelter), the humane treatment of animals, healthcare for underserved populations (including mental, oral, and physical health), and public radio or television broadcasting. Secondary areas considered occasionally include environmental programs and select college or university initiatives, particularly when connected to other core focus areas or based in geographic priority areas. Funding requests related to land conservation or general public education in environmental awareness are not typically supported. The foundation also makes clear that it does not support general education programming for grades K–16 or general operating support for higher education institutions, although project-based funding is possible. Geographically, while funding is available throughout the state of Maine, the Doree Taylor Foundation gives preference to organizations operating in or serving the towns of Boothbay Harbor, Southport, and Brunswick. Applicants must be tax-exempt 501(c)(3) public charities (excluding Type III non-functionally integrated support organizations), municipalities, local government units such as public health departments, federally recognized Tribal governments, or religious organizations. Applicants whose projects are primarily supported by this grant alone—more than 25% of project costs or more than 5% of total organizational budgets—are less likely to be competitive. The foundation accepts online applications only, with two application deadlines each year: March 1 and September 1. For proposals submitted in March, decisions are typically announced by July 31, while those submitted by the September deadline are generally notified by January 31 of the following year. No applications are accepted via email, postal mail, or in person, and letters of inquiry or intent are not permitted. Only one application per organization per calendar year may be submitted to this and other designated foundations managed by the MA office, unless otherwise exempt. Grant applications must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. ET on the listed due dates, or the next business day if the deadline falls on a weekend or federal holiday. Most awards are one-year in duration, although multi-year support may be granted occasionally. General operating and program support are preferred; capital support is considered but not prioritized, with small capital requests sometimes included as part of broader project budgets. A final report is required within one year of grant disbursement, regardless of whether all funds have been spent. Multi-year awards require annual reporting. Incomplete reporting disqualifies applicants from future funding. Applicants are encouraged to review the Doree Taylor Appendix in the Massachusetts Grantmaking Procedures for tailored application guidance. For questions or clarifications, applicants should contact the Massachusetts office via email at ma.grantmaking@bofa.com or by phone at 866.778.6859. Communications should specify the foundation name to ensure proper routing.
