Grant Description

Wisconsin Humanities offers Major Grants to nonprofit organizations based in Wisconsin that aim to implement or sustain innovative public humanities programming. Although all grant programs have been temporarily suspended, the organization encourages interested parties to subscribe to their e-newsletter for updates on when the application rounds will reopen. The grants are designed to support projects that inspire new insights, offer meaningful perspectives, and enrich community understanding of issues related to democracy, civic engagement, and public discourse. Major Grants fund community-initiated projects that enhance civic health, foster empathy, and create opportunities for connection among diverse groups. These initiatives often address pressing societal challenges through a humanities lens and can include formats such as educational workshops, digital projects, and more. The grants are capped at $10,000 and require applicants to be Wisconsin-based nonprofit organizations. Before applying, first-time applicants are required to confirm their project's eligibility by scheduling a consultation with the Grants Director. Organizations can receive a maximum of two grants within a 24-month period, after which they must observe a one-year hiatus before reapplying. Different departments or branches of larger entities such as universities or city agencies are considered separate applicants. To prepare for the application, potential grantees are advised to download the application instructions and complete their project descriptions offline before submitting through the online portal. The application process includes uploading several mandatory forms, such as the Budget Form, Project Personnel Form, W9 Form, and Certification Form. Applicants must also demonstrate that their project involves humanities expertise, includes matching funds, and that activities will begin only after the funding decision. Applicants can request a draft review of their submission if they contact the program staff at least three weeks before the deadline. All applications must be submitted electronically via the Wisconsin Humanities online portal, and applicants must ensure that their organization or fiscal sponsor has a Unique Entity Identifier (UEI). The fiscal sponsor must also be based in Wisconsin. For further assistance or to schedule a draft review or eligibility consultation, applicants are encouraged to contact Meghan Dudle at meghan.dudle@wisconsinhumanities.org. Additional support and updates can be accessed by subscribing to the organization’s e-newsletter or visiting their official website.
