Summer Scholars Program
This program provides a paid internship opportunity for undergraduate and community college students interested in biomedical and public health research, offering hands-on experience and professional development in a leading pediatric research institution.
The Summer Scholars Program at Seattle Children’s Research Institute is a nine-week, full-time, paid internship opportunity designed for undergraduate, community college, or technical college students interested in biomedical sciences, behavioral health, public health, or related STEM disciplines. Hosted by one of the nation’s leading pediatric research institutions, the program aims to nurture the next generation of researchers and medical professionals by offering hands-on experience in basic, clinical, community-based, or translational research under the guidance of experienced mentors. Each selected scholar is matched with a mentor whose work aligns with the applicant’s stated research interests. Scholars actively participate in research teams, dedicating 35 hours per week to mentored research. The curriculum includes biweekly professional development sessions covering topics such as responsible and ethical research conduct, goal setting for graduate or professional school, and networking. At the end of the program, scholars publish an abstract and present their work at a poster symposium. To be eligible, applicants must be at least 18 years old by the program start date and possess a Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. Only currently enrolled students in undergraduate, community, or technical colleges in good academic standing may apply. Graduate and medical school students and those graduating before the program start are ineligible. Priority is given to applicants with no prior formal research experience to ensure broader access to research opportunities. The program offers a stipend of $7,100, an additional $400 food stipend, and an ORCA card for local public transportation. Scholars must reside in or be able to commute to Seattle during the internship. Housing is not provided or arranged by the program. Applications for the 2026 cycle will open on November 17, 2025, and must be submitted by January 2, 2026. A mentor letter of recommendation is required by January 16, 2026. The selection committee will notify applicants of decisions by the end of March. Selected scholars will participate from June 15 through August 14, 2026. Project matching will occur between April and May 15, 2026. The program emphasizes diversity and encourages applicants from all backgrounds. It seeks to foster equity and inclusion in scientific advancement by supporting individuals from underrepresented communities in biomedical and public health fields.
