The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) is inviting applications for Research Grants (R01) focused on the analysis of existing genomic data related to human dental, oral, or craniofacial (DOC) biology and diseases. This funding opportunity supports projects employing statistical and computational methods, including artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), to analyze publicly available genomic and complementary datasets. Validation of analytical methods or results through experimental or in silico approaches is required. Priority will be given to projects addressing oral health disparities and exploring biological pathways that may lead to new intervention targets or reveal the pathogenicity of genetic variants.
Funding is provided through the R01 mechanism, with application budgets determined based on the actual needs of each project. Awards may last up to three years, contingent upon scientific merit, program priorities, and the availability of funds. Clinical trials are not allowed under this funding opportunity. Applicants may use genomic data types such as genome-wide single nucleotide variants, whole genome sequences, transcriptomics, and more, potentially combined with complementary datasets like proteomics, metabolomics, and clinical data. Public sharing of data used in the research is strongly recommended.
Eligible applicants include U.S.-based higher education institutions, nonprofits, for-profit organizations, state and local governments, tribal nations, and foreign organizations. Researchers from diverse backgrounds, including underrepresented groups, are encouraged to apply. Organizations must register with SAM.gov, eRA Commons, and Grants.gov before submission. Applicants requesting $500,000 or more in direct costs annually must contact a Scientific/Research Contact at least six weeks before submission.
Applications must include a detailed research strategy that outlines the significance and feasibility of the proposed work, the justification for dataset selection, and plans for validation and data sharing. Proposals must comply with NIH’s Research (R) Instructions and Data Management and Sharing Policy.
The submission deadlines are February 5, June 5, and October 5 annually. Applications will undergo NIH peer review, evaluated on significance, innovation, rigor, feasibility, and the expertise and resources of the investigative team. Successful applicants will be notified through a Notice of Award and must submit annual progress reports.
