Grant Description

The Mount Airy/Surry County Community Foundation, an affiliate of the North Carolina Community Foundation, has been serving the Mount Airy and Surry County area since its founding in 1999. This local philanthropic organization operates with a mission to build community assets through the creation of permanent endowments, award grants, and provide community leadership, all managed under the guidance of a local advisory board. The Foundation supports a broad range of community needs including education, youth development, human services, health, food and nutrition, and the arts. Its community grantmaking fund is the source of annual grant awards, typically ranging from $500 to $1,500. In 2025, for instance, a grant totaling $1,730 was awarded to Surry/Stokes Friends of Youth. Grants are made available to qualified charitable organizations serving Mount Airy and Surry County, with applications reviewed based on alignment with local priorities and needs. For the 2026 grant cycle, applications will be accepted between March 6, 2026, and noon ET on April 7, 2026. All applications must be submitted online through the North Carolina Community Foundation’s Grant Application Portal. New applicants must first create a user profile following Training Module I, while returning applicants may log in with their existing credentials. Both new and returning applicants must refer to Training Module II for instructions on how to submit a grant application. The Foundation uses an annual Community Needs Assessment to guide its funding decisions. Applications that do not adhere to the published guidelines will be deemed ineligible. All eligible applications will be reviewed by community board members with knowledge of local needs. Funding is not available for annual fund drives, capital campaigns, political or religious doctrine activities, re-granting, or costs incurred prior to the application deadline. Programs must be nondiscriminatory and serve the broader community. Organizations eligible to apply include 501(c)(3) public charities registered with the IRS, organizations with a qualified fiscal sponsor, public schools and local government entities, fire and rescue departments, and religious entities offering secular community outreach programs. General operating support is available except for religious entities, which may only apply for specific charitable activities. Grant decisions are typically announced about two months after the close of the application period.
