Ameriprise Financial Grant Program
This grant provides funding to nonprofit organizations that focus on meeting basic needs, supporting community vitality, or engaging volunteers in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, with an emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Ameriprise Financial, a private wealth management firm with a history spanning over 130 years, offers philanthropic support to nonprofit organizations across the United States through its structured grantmaking program. The organization’s philanthropic vision is closely tied to its corporate mission of fostering financial independence and community well-being. It channels its charitable resources into nonprofit efforts that reflect its corporate values, emphasizing employee engagement, volunteerism, and community strengthening. Grants are awarded through a biannual cycle, with applications accepted during two windows: November 15 to January 15 and March 15 to May 15 each year. Priority is granted to returning grantees and those organizations that demonstrate existing relationships with Ameriprise employees or advisors through volunteer engagement. Funding for new applicants is limited, and such applicants are encouraged to contact Ameriprise if they do not operate in one of the company's five priority employee centers: Minneapolis, MN; Boston, MA; Charlotte, NC; Las Vegas, NV; and New York, NY. The geographic focus of the grantmaking reflects Ameriprise's intention to amplify the impact of employee involvement. The Ameriprise grant program is centered on two main funding categories. The first, “Meeting Basic Needs,” includes support for hunger-relief programs (such as food banks and culturally appropriate meal services), shelter services (from emergency shelters to permanent housing), and adult self-sufficiency initiatives. These include workforce readiness and financial literacy programs aimed at adults over the age of 21. Notably, certain organizations such as Meals on Wheels and Habitat for Humanity are supported only in Ameriprise’s Minneapolis headquarters region. The second major funding area is “Supporting Community Vitality,” which includes economic development, small business support, cultural enrichment, and, by invitation only, disaster recovery efforts. The cultural enrichment arm supports inclusive and diverse arts programming and education, though single events and individual artists are not funded. To apply, organizations must submit a complete application, including a federal 990, a recent financial audit, and documentation showing measurable impact and financial stability. Applications must also include a nondiscrimination policy. An optional letter of endorsement may be included if there is an existing relationship with Ameriprise volunteers. Ameriprise does not support organizations outside the U.S. or those engaging in religious, political, medical research, or capital campaigns, among other restricted categories. Grant decisions are typically communicated within four months of each deadline. All applications must be submitted online and completed by midnight Central Time on the deadline dates. Required documentation must be included at the time of submission—placeholders or incomplete submissions will result in automatic rejection. Ameriprise encourages applicants to reach out to [email protected] if uncertain about eligibility or alignment. Ameriprise’s funding is intended for 501(c)(3) organizations operating in the U.S. and its territories. It emphasizes sustained partnerships and results-driven philanthropy, with an expectation of follow-up reporting from prior grantees. The grant does not offer support to individuals, foundations, or for projects such as galas, scholarships, or medical programs. Through its careful targeting of charitable dollars, Ameriprise Financial aims to build long-term community resilience, financial security, and vibrant cultural ecosystems.
