AAUW Community Action Grants
This funding opportunity provides financial support to nonprofits and educational institutions in the U.S. that create innovative programs to empower K-12 girls, particularly from underrepresented communities, in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
The AAUW Community Action Grants are offered by the American Association of University Women (AAUW), a longstanding organization committed to advancing gender equity through research, education, and advocacy. The primary objective of this funding opportunity is to dismantle barriers that limit girls’ participation in STEM fields and to create inclusive, community-driven programming that fosters confidence, skills, and interest in STEM among K-12 girls. The grants provide financial support for nonprofits and educational institutions implementing innovative, community-based programs designed to support diverse talent pipelines in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This grant program awards up to $75,000 to eligible organizations seeking to empower girls through hands-on learning, mentorship from women in STEM, and family-engaged programming. AAUW particularly values programs that uplift girls from historically underrepresented communities and that encourage the development of lasting STEM identities. Funding may support both new initiatives and the scaling of successful ongoing programs, provided they demonstrate alignment with the AAUW’s mission and have clear, community-rooted strategies for impact. Programs funded by this grant must be designed with intention and evidence-based practices, and may focus on any of the following: building STEM skills, fostering confidence and identity in STEM, preparing girls for college and careers in STEM, or providing mentorship from women professionals in these fields. Applications are evaluated based on their community-centered approach, capacity for learning and adaptation, evidence of community involvement, and potential for broader impact. Applicants must also demonstrate financial transparency and sustainability practices. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations or educational institutions such as K-12 schools that are based in the United States. Applicants must have a demonstrated track record—or in the case of emerging organizations, a clear plan and team capacity—to deliver programming for girls in grades K-12. The AAUW looks for organizations with strong local relationships, culturally responsive practices, and systems for collecting and applying participant feedback. The application process begins with the submission of a Letter of Interest (LOI), which must be submitted by October 31, 2025. LOIs will be reviewed on a rolling basis through November 21, 2025. Invited applicants will then have from November 2025 through January 2026 to submit a full application. Final selections will be announced by April 15, 2026, and funds will be disbursed by July 2026. Required documents at the full application stage include proof of nonprofit status, recent financial documents, a detailed project budget, and a comprehensive narrative outlining goals, activities, and expected impact. Disqualifying factors include any organizational affiliation with current AAUW Board members, staff, review panelists, or their immediate family members. Awardees are expected to participate in cohort-based learning sessions, submit mid-term and final reports, and contribute to collective learning about what drives success in closing the gender gap in STEM.
