Grant Description

The Fund for Omaha, administered by the Omaha Community Foundation, is a locally-focused grant program aimed at strengthening community systems and enhancing overall quality of life for residents in the Omaha metropolitan area. With a longstanding commitment to supporting nonprofits, the Foundation leverages the Fund for Omaha to bridge resource gaps and expand opportunities for individuals and families, particularly those engaged in grassroots community development efforts. This annual funding initiative is part of the Foundation’s broader philanthropic strategy to build a more connected and equitable region. The 2024 grant cycle of the Fund for Omaha is designed to support nonprofit organizations that enhance economic stability, foster essential services, and strengthen community engagement. The grants can be used for general operating support, which provides nonprofits with flexible funding to advance their missions. Applicants may request up to $25,000. The grant cycle operates on a defined timeline, with applications open from July 1 through August 1 each year, and notifications sent by October 31. Four key priority areas have been identified for funding in 2024: Economic Opportunity, Housing and Neighborhoods, Maternal Health and Birth Outcomes, and Mental and Behavioral Health. Economic Opportunity includes expanding access to education, job readiness, and fair wages. The Housing and Neighborhoods category supports affordable housing, homeownership, and social public spaces. Maternal Health targets enhanced care for pregnant individuals, while Mental and Behavioral Health seeks to improve access to inclusive, comprehensive care. Eligibility for the Fund for Omaha is limited to public, tax-exempt organizations under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, as well as those working with a fiscal sponsor that meets that criterion. Only organizations with annual operating budgets of $5 million or less are eligible. Applicants must also provide services within the Omaha metro area, specifically Douglas, Sarpy, and Pottawattamie counties. Prior recipients of this grant are welcome to reapply. The Omaha Community Foundation evaluates applications based on several criteria, including community impact, cultural understanding, community engagement, and the potential for capacity building. These criteria ensure that funded organizations not only align with the fund’s goals but also demonstrate strong community ties and leadership informed by lived experiences. Applications must be submitted through the Foundation’s online grant portal. Applicants needing assistance can contact Senior Program Managers Dasia Horne at dasia@omahafoundation.org (402-933-4245) or Laura Contreras at laura@omahafoundation.org (402-884-0792). The Fund for Omaha remains a key vehicle for local philanthropic investment, helping small nonprofits advance systemic solutions and deliver direct services to enhance life in the Omaha metropolitan area.
