Grant Description

The FY26 Community Challenge Grant (CCG) program, offered by the City and County of San Francisco, funds community-led neighborhood beautification projects that support the values of resilience, safety, and belonging. The program recognizes the interconnectedness of neighborhoods and aims to empower local organizations through investment in public space improvements and community activation efforts. Grants range from $50,000 to $150,000 and are awarded through a competitive application process. The CCG program supports two program areas. Program Area A, Infrastructure, funds physical improvements to public spaces—such as greening, murals, community gardens, and pedestrian safety enhancements. Program Area B, Activation, funds community-building activities, such as arts and cultural programming, events, or installations that activate and bring life to public spaces. All projects must take place within the City and County of San Francisco and receive approval from the relevant property owner(s) before implementation. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations or those working with a qualified fiscal sponsor. In addition to nonprofit status, applicants or key project personnel must demonstrate prior experience completing projects of similar size and scope. Fiscal sponsors, when used, must also meet the eligibility criteria and be prepared to assume legal and fiscal responsibilities. All applications must clearly identify the project location, demonstrate community need and support, and show alignment with CCG’s core principles. Applications must be submitted by October 9, 2025. Projects are expected to begin on or after January 1, 2026. The standard grant term is up to 18 months, with the possibility of extension to 24 months for projects requiring complex permits such as the Love Our Neighborhoods Tier 2 Permit. A strong emphasis is placed on inclusive project design, accessibility, sustainability, and partnerships with community-based stakeholders. Projects must be free and open to the public and demonstrate long-term value to the neighborhood. The program guide outlines requirements for budgeting, timeline development, and community engagement planning. Applications must include a detailed scope of work, budget, timeline, outreach plan, and letters of support. All funded projects will be required to report on progress, expenditures, and community impact at defined intervals throughout the grant term. Questions about the program may be directed to the CCG team through the City Administrator’s Office website. Applicants are encouraged to review the full guidebook prior to submission.
