Grant Description

The Henry A. Jordan, M.D., Preservation Excellence Fund is a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, a private nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of historic sites across the United States. This fund was established in November 1996 to honor Dr. Henry A. Jordan for his leadership and dedicated service to the national preservation movement. The fund is specifically designed to support preservation efforts in the Mid-Atlantic region, including Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. The primary objective of this grant program is to facilitate collaborative and innovative efforts in preserving both natural and cultural resources. It supports initiatives that foster dialogue between diverse sectors such as land conservation, historic preservation, transportation, government, and business. Projects that promote sustainable community development, conservation of open spaces, and public engagement in preservation activities are particularly encouraged. Up to $7,500 can be awarded per project under this grant program. Eligible applicants include public agencies, 501(c)(3) organizations, and other nonprofits. Applicants must be members of specific National Trust membership programs to receive funds, although non-members may still apply. Previous recipients of National Trust grants are eligible if they are in good standing. Restrictions include a cap of three grants in two years per organization, and only one grant per project phase or application round. The grant application opens approximately 6 to 8 weeks before the submission deadline, which is June 2, 2025. Applications must be submitted through the National Trust’s online grant portal. Required documentation includes high-resolution images, evidence of nonprofit status, a property owner consent letter (if applicable), and a completed application with budget details. Review takes up to ten weeks, after which applicants are notified via email. Funded activities are limited to planning and educational efforts in preservation. Eligible expenses include consultant fees, educational materials, and certain administrative costs. Ineligible uses include construction, real estate purchases, and general conference support. A dollar-for-dollar match is required, which can include in-kind contributions. Grant recipients must adhere to the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and meet other compliance requirements, including non-discrimination and acknowledgment of funding in project materials. Support and additional information are available through the National Trust’s grants staff. Questions about membership or project eligibility can be directed to members@savingplaces.org. Contact details for the National Trust include their Washington, DC office at 600 14th Street NW, Suite 500, with email at info@savingplaces.org and phone support at 202-588-6000 or toll-free at 800-944-6847.
