Grant Description

The Art Project Grant offered by ArtsWA, the Washington State Arts Commission, is designed to provide project-specific funding for groups delivering community-centered arts and cultural experiences. Notably, applicants are not required to have an arts-focused mission, making this grant accessible to a broad array of organizations that incorporate arts, culture, or heritage into their community outreach and programming. The intent of this funding is to support projects with defined objectives, a clear timeline, and a distinct public engagement component that occurs entirely within the state of Washington and within the fiscal year 2026–2027. This grant program targets one-time projects rather than ongoing programming. Eligible projects must occur between July 1, 2026, and June 30, 2027, and be open to the public. Examples include events such as a concert held at a nursing home or a special cultural festival—activities that are distinguishable from an organization's routine programming. Funding is structured as a reimbursement model, with applicants receiving payment after submitting evidence of incurred expenses. Grant requests must fall within the range of $1,000 to $3,000, and the awarded amount depends on available funds and the total number of applicants. Due to increasing demand and limited budget growth, applicants should be aware that funding levels may be lower than in previous years. Organizations applying must fall into one of several categories: 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations with both current federal tax-exempt status and current state nonprofit registration, local arts agencies officially designated by a local government, tribal governments, or groups fiscally sponsored by qualifying 501(c)(3) organizations. Ineligible applicants include individuals, for-profit organizations, government entities, educational institutions, and K–12 schools. Required documentation includes the IRS Letter of Determination, UEI, EIN, Washington State UBI, and a valid Statewide Vendor (SWV) number. For fiscally sponsored groups, all such identifiers must correspond to the fiscal sponsor. The application window for the Art Project Grant opens on March 9, 2026, and closes on April 16, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. Applicants will be notified of the results by the last week of May 2026. To assist applicants, ArtsWA offers informational webinars on March 11 and March 25, along with dedicated office hours from March 17 through April 14. Awarded projects must submit a reimbursement form by June 30, 2027, and a final report by July 31, 2027. The entire funding period is limited to one fiscal year and does not support multi-year initiatives. ArtsWA’s funding priorities include small and emerging organizations, those with limited operating budgets (particularly under $100,000), and entities located outside of King County and the City of Tacoma. Additional priority is given to groups operating in counties identified as economically distressed and those serving populations where 25% or more are from underserved communities. Underserved is defined broadly to include individuals limited in their access to the arts due to geography, economic status, race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, or other systemic barriers. Applications are evaluated by ArtsWA staff for eligibility and scored based on alignment with strategic goals, community impact, and project feasibility. Funding recommendations are submitted for final approval by ArtsWA’s Board of Commissioners or Executive Director. The application must be submitted through Submittable, the designated online portal. For assistance, applicants can contact Miguel Guillen, Program Manager, at 360-252-9970 or [email protected], or Ashley Marshall, Program Assistant, at 360-485-1524 or [email protected].
