Grant Description

The Indigenous Earth Fund, a program of the Decolonizing Wealth Project, is accepting applications for its 2025 grant cycle. This initiative is rooted in a commitment to resourcing Indigenous-led organizations and Tribes that are driving climate resiliency, environmental stewardship, and cultural preservation in the United States and its territories. In 2025, the program will distribute an additional $1 million to Indigenous-led entities advancing strategic and community-driven responses to climate change and conservation. The fund particularly emphasizes political advocacy and capacity building to support movements centered on Indigenous knowledge and environmental justice. Grants will support efforts in several key focus areas. These include ecosystem and cultural conservation, such as protection of bio-cultural heritage, water restoration, and Indigenous-led natural resource management. Food sovereignty and subsistence rights are also prioritized, with an emphasis on revitalizing traditional harvesting and hunting practices, defending vital food sources like salmon, and reinforcing Indigenous food systems. The fund additionally supports initiatives that facilitate economic development and the transition to renewable energy sources like wind, hydro, and solar. Beyond programmatic work, the fund welcomes proposals aimed at strengthening the strategic infrastructure of Indigenous climate movements, including legal defense, policy advocacy, and communications strategies. Eligible applicants include U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, Federally Recognized Tribes, and fiscally-sponsored projects operating under a 501(c)(3). Non-Federally Recognized Tribes may also apply if partnered with an eligible nonprofit. The fund prioritizes organizations led by Indigenous individuals, including Native American, Native Hawaiian, and Alaska Native leadership. Coalitions actively working on climate advocacy aligned with the fundโ€™s priorities are encouraged to apply. Private non-operating foundations and individuals are not eligible. Preference will be given to current grantee partners whose climate advocacy efforts are already in motion and align with the stated funding priorities. Applications are to be submitted exclusively via the JustFund platform. Separate instructions exist for current grantee partners and new applicants. Those who received funding in 2024 should refer to the updated RFP for current grantees, while new applicants must first register with JustFund before accessing the appropriate application materials. Submissions outside of the JustFund system will not be considered. A public informational webinar will be hosted on August 7, 2025, from 2:00 to 3:30 PM EST (11:00 AM to 12:30 PM PST). Attendance is encouraged but not mandatory, and a recording will be made available. The application deadline is August 19, 2025, at 5:00 PM Pacific Time. While the exact award announcement date has not been specified, prospective applicants can access an FAQ section and a live Q&A thread for ongoing updates and clarifications. The fund does not operate on a rolling basis but appears to be recurring, with prior annual cycles indicated. For the 2024 grant cycle, $4.3 million was awarded, with 70 percent of funds going to women-led organizations and more than 200 Tribes engaged through the initiative. The Indigenous Earth Fund is managed by the Decolonizing Wealth Project, which is fiscally sponsored by the Amalgamated Charitable Foundation. The program aligns with broader organizational strategies that prioritize healing, storytelling, and systemic transformation. Additional related funding initiatives include the California Tribal Land Return, and National and California Truth and Healing Funds, all of which focus on Indigenous justice and cultural restoration. Further information and updates are available through the Decolonizing Wealth Project's official site.
