Damon Runyon Scholars Program for Advancing Research and Knowledge (SPARK)
This program provides funding and mentorship for recent college graduates and seniors from underrepresented backgrounds to gain research experience in biomedical science by working in established labs.
The Damon Runyon Scholars Program for Advancing Research and Knowledge (SPARK) is a one-year, post-baccalaureate research internship funded by the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation, a private foundation known for its commitment to funding bold and high-risk cancer research. The SPARK initiative is designed to provide promising recent college graduates, especially those from underrepresented or disadvantaged backgrounds, with structured research experiences in leading biomedical laboratories across the United States. This program aims to increase diversity in science and train future leaders in biomedical research. SPARK Scholars are matched with established researchers who are current or former Damon Runyon scientists at partner academic institutions. These scholars are fully embedded in the host lab environment, gaining access to training and institutional resources akin to other post-baccalaureate researchers. The program features structured engagement opportunities, including a mandatory three-day Fellows' Retreat and quarterly virtual sessions on scientific communication, grant writing, and professional development, all led by Damon Runyon-affiliated scientists. Each SPARK Scholar receives financial support including up to $50,000 in stipend, an additional $8,500 for living expenses, and up to $2,500 for travel to scientific meetings and the annual Fellows’ Retreat. The financial support is disbursed to the host institution with stipulations regarding its use. Scholars receive the living allowance directly and are responsible for tax obligations. A $1,500 allowance is also granted to the institution’s program director to fund community-building activities. No indirect costs or institutional overhead may be charged to the award. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or DACA recipients, and must have completed a bachelor’s degree within the past 36 months. They must demonstrate a strong commitment to research and plan to pursue a PhD, MD, DO, or MD/PhD. The application process is hosted on Proposal Central and is open until February 2, 2026, at 4:00 PM ET. An informational webinar will be held on January 7, 2026, to guide applicants. Applications are evaluated on passion for research, academic performance, and the strength of a letter of recommendation. At the end of the program, Scholars must submit a comprehensive report detailing their research activities, achievements, abstracts, collaborations, STEM outreach efforts, future plans, and a mentor’s evaluation. Scholars must also submit financial reports through the institution’s financial office. Publications and presentations must acknowledge Damon Runyon support. The program does not allow other employment or academic pursuits during the award period, and confidentiality agreements that hinder research dissemination are prohibited.
