Student Travel Grant Program
This program provides financial support for undergraduate and graduate students in engineering and physical sciences to attend a key rail industry conference, enhancing their education and career opportunities in the rail sector.
MxV Rail, a subsidiary of the Association of American Railroads (AAR), has launched a newly expanded Student Travel Grant Program to foster the development of future rail industry professionals. Formerly known as University Days, this program has evolved to provide a more immersive and practical experience for students in engineering and physical sciences. The Student Travel Grant supports undergraduate and graduate students attending ABET-accredited institutions in the U.S., helping them participate in the 31st Annual AAR Research Review taking place from April 28 to April 30, 2026, at MxV Rail’s dedicated facility in Pueblo, Colorado. The grant offers a travel reimbursement of up to $1,500 and complimentary registration to selected students. By attending the AAR Research Review, recipients will gain access to presentations on cutting-edge rail technologies and safety innovations, as well as opportunities to network with leading professionals from Class I railroads, suppliers, government agencies, and academic research centers. This exposure is intended to enhance the students’ understanding of real-world challenges in rail transportation and introduce them to career pathways within the sector. To apply, students must submit an online application that includes a short form, a personal essay of one to two pages, and one faculty recommendation letter. The estimated time to complete the application is between 10 to 15 minutes. The final deadline to submit all materials is March 6, 2026. Award notifications will be issued by March 20, 2026, allowing students adequate time to prepare for their travel. This travel grant reinforces MxV Rail’s role as a critical partner in the development and advancement of the North American rail network. As the premier engineering and research arm of AAR, MxV Rail focuses on innovation, safety, and technical excellence, supporting a wide range of services from consulting and testing to training and standards development. The AAR Research Review represents an ideal platform to introduce students to this mission and to inspire them to contribute to the future of rail. Students attending the Research Review will benefit from direct interaction with MxV Rail engineers and researchers, and will witness firsthand the type of high-impact studies that are shaping policy, design, and operations across the industry. Through participation, students are not only given financial support, but also the rare opportunity to align their academic trajectory with key industry trends and players. MxV Rail’s initiative reflects its broader commitment to education and workforce development. By providing access to this leading annual event, the Student Travel Grant Program helps bridge the gap between classroom learning and industry innovation, reinforcing the importance of academic and professional partnerships in solving transportation challenges.
