Emerging Filmmakers Program
This program provides financial support and mentorship to early-career female-identifying and gender-expansive filmmakers in Washington State, enabling them to create original short films while fostering their artistic careers.
The Emerging Filmmakers Program, administered by Emergence Films, is a creative and financial support initiative designed for early-career female-identifying and gender-expansive filmmakers. The program aims to empower underrepresented voices in the film industry by providing a $10,000 non-recoupable grant, mentorship, production assistance, and a comprehensive development and distribution strategy for original short films. Structured as a year-long cohort experience, the program offers a unique opportunity to create impactful storytelling while cultivating new artistic careers within Washington State. Applications for the 2026 cohort open on December 1, 2025, and close on January 4, 2026. Teams must consist of two to three individuals in the roles of writer, director, and producer, with distinct leads for creative and logistical responsibilities. Each participant must be at least 18 years old and based in Washington State. The program seeks applicants without existing credits in the roles theyโre applying for on feature films or higher-budget shorts, ensuring the opportunity is reserved for emerging artists. Participants will receive milestone-based grant disbursements and must complete their short films by December 31, 2026. Each participant will attend two immersive in-person weekends: a Kickoff Weekend in March and a Masterclass Weekend in April, both of which include accommodation, meals, and travel reimbursements. Writers will also participate in a dedicated writers' retreat. Additional features include bi-monthly remote check-ins, three one-on-one mentorship calls, and the chance to work on professional Washington-based film productions. Each participant is also paid a $25/hour stipend during learning weekends and is expected to contribute behind-the-scenes content for marketing and feedback purposes. All teams will participate in a mid-year work-in-progress screening and a final celebratory screening in Seattle. At the conclusion of the program, teams can pitch a microbudget feature film to Emergence Films for possible future collaboration. Applicants must complete a detailed written application covering their team structure, creative goals, storytelling concept(s), and personal/professional aspirations. A $10 application fee is required, though waivers are available upon request. Emergence Films encourages applicants with stories that promote empathy, inclusion, healing, and social impact through cinematic storytelling. All questions can be directed to the program's official contact email.
