The Society of Family Planning is offering the "Documenting the Impact of U.S. Policy and Legal Stressors on Contraceptive Care" funding opportunity to support research on the effects of recent and forthcoming changes in U.S. policies and legal decisions on contraceptive care, especially among underserved populations. The initiative arises in response to current threats to the contraceptive care safety net, such as the April 2025 actions to deny funding to Title X providers and the anticipated Supreme Court ruling in Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic. These developments could significantly limit access to family planning services, particularly for people of color, low-income individuals, and others facing systemic oppression.
The purpose of this grant is to fund empirical research that documents these impacts at multiple levels—including healthcare systems, institutions, clinicians, and patients—with an emphasis on projects that maintain enduring relevance despite a rapidly changing policy environment. Research must be positioned to produce actionable evidence leading to changes in clinical practice, public policy, or health service delivery. Proposals must demonstrate adherence to the Society’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Vision and the equity-informed principles developed by the Coalition to Expand Contraceptive Access.
Applicants may submit proposals with budgets of up to $150,000, with projects to be completed within 24 months. Up to five projects are expected to be funded. Funding also includes coverage for the processing fees for two open-access publications if the work is published within two years of project completion. Proposals must be submitted electronically as a single PDF file via the Society’s application portal.
Eligibility is limited to tax-exempt organizations operating within the United States. The principal investigator must be affiliated with the organization, although Society membership is not required. The submission deadline for proposals is July 7, 2025, by 8:59 pm PT/11:59 pm ET. Awards will be announced in late August 2025, with funds available immediately thereafter.
The proposal must include a summary, detailed narrative (8–10 pages), a budget and budget narrative, team biosketches or resumes, and proof of tax-exempt status. Applications will be peer-reviewed according to several weighted criteria, including methods, impact, relevance, equity, team expertise, team positionality, and budget appropriateness. Specific attention will be given to projects demonstrating thoughtful consideration of race, gender, and systemic barriers in their design and execution.
