The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), in collaboration with the Michigan Office of Future Mobility and Electrification, has funded the Shared Streets and Spaces Grant (SSSG) program to support public space improvements in communities across Michigan. The program awarded $6.5 million to 27 municipalities and 8 transit agencies to implement projects that make communities more walkable, bikeable, and transit-friendly.
The SSSG program is focused on quick-build infrastructure projects such as improved sidewalks, curbs, plazas, streets, and transit facilities that support public health, safe mobility, and economic vitality. All projects must be located on public property, be permanent in nature, and be accessible to the public. Funds may be used for construction and certain design services after grant award, but not for salaries, property acquisition, or pilot installations.
Eligible applicants are limited to incorporated cities and public transit agencies in the state of Michigan. Each entity may submit only one application per round. However, cross-jurisdictional applications are allowed when one municipality acts as the lead. Applications require demonstration of project feasibility, including public engagement, understanding of property ownership, and documentation of community support.
Applicants are evaluated based on innovation, coordination with partners, equity and accessibility, ease of implementation, and clarity of the proposal. Applications must include a detailed implementation plan, timeline, measurable outcomes, and a budget using the MDOT template. Projects must be under contract or expended by September 30, 2027.
The application process is currently closed as of January 2025. MDOT has stated that if additional funds become available, a formal announcement will be issued. While not rolling, the program is expected to recur in the future. MDOT advises prospective applicants to prepare for future rounds by reviewing the current guidance.
