Ocala Municipal Arts Commission Grant Program
This grant provides financial support to individual artists and nonprofit arts organizations in Marion County, Florida, to promote and enhance the local cultural landscape through artistic projects and programming.
The Ocala Municipal Arts Commission (OMAC) Grant Program offers financial support to individual artists and nonprofit arts organizations to foster the development and awareness of the cultural climate within Ocala and Marion County, Florida. Established as an advisory agency by the City of Ocala, OMAC is recognized as the Local Arts Agency for Marion County by the Marion County Commission and works across all art forms and cultural groups in the region. The program is primarily funded through the sale of Florida’s “State of the Arts” specialty license plates, with OMAC serving as the county's official designee for this initiative. Funds are allocated through a mini-grant process to applicants demonstrating a commitment to enriching the community through artistic projects and programming. OMAC accepts grant applications on a rolling basis throughout the calendar year. Funding decisions are made during its bi-monthly meetings, typically held on the first Wednesday of February, April, June, August, October, and December at Ocala City Hall. Applicants are notified in advance of the meeting at which their application will be reviewed. If an application is approved, the grant must then be formally approved by OMAC at the following meeting through the adoption of official minutes. Grant disbursement follows once a numbered invoice is submitted to the City of Ocala. Final reports are required within 30 days of project completion, including documentation of expenditures and community impact through materials such as photos, surveys, and promotional content. To be eligible, individual artists must have maintained at least one year of residency in Marion County and have not received an OMAC grant within the past twelve months. Their proposals must demonstrate a clear intention to promote the arts locally. Nonprofit arts organizations and educational institutions with 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status must similarly have a track record of at least one year serving the Marion County community. Applicants must not have received a grant within the previous year and must be in good standing with all required reports for past awards. The maximum grant award is generally $1,000, although the commission maintains discretion to partially fund projects or provide increased support for initiatives with significant projected cultural impact. Applicants must include a detailed project description and itemized budget, outlining any additional funding sources and the ability to continue the project with partial OMAC support. All applicants are required to present their proposals in person at a scheduled OMAC meeting and are encouraged to provide visual documentation, promotional materials, and letters of support to strengthen their application. Certain expenditures are expressly prohibited under this program, including capital improvements, lobbying efforts, debt payments, and activities with restricted or discriminatory participation. Funded projects must be accessible to the public and located within Marion County. For public art proposals, recipients must demonstrate that the resulting artwork will be maintained and accessible for a minimum of five years. OMAC emphasizes the importance of community engagement and accountability. Grantees are expected to recognize the commission’s support in their promotional materials by including the OMAC logo, and this use must be documented in the final report. The program reflects a broader commitment by the City of Ocala and its partners to strengthen and sustain the local arts ecosystem, ensuring that public support for the arts results in measurable community benefits.
