Agriculture and Food Research Initiative Competitive Grants Program Foundational and Applied Science Program
This program provides funding for research and projects that improve food safety, agricultural productivity, and sustainability, targeting academic institutions, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations involved in agriculture and food sciences.
The Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) under the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) offers competitive grants through its Foundational and Applied Science Program (FAS) for fiscal year 2024. This program is designed to support research, education, and extension projects that address critical needs in food and agricultural sciences. The aim is to advance knowledge in key areas that promote sustainable agriculture and food production, ultimately contributing to the well-being of rural communities and the agricultural economy. This year's program is focused on six priority areas, including plant health and production, animal health and production, food safety and nutrition, bioenergy and natural resources, agricultural systems and technology, and agricultural economics. Each of these areas targets specific challenges within the broader agricultural sector, seeking innovative solutions that can help address both current and future needs. The program encourages the development of technologies and strategies that will enhance the productivity, safety, and sustainability of U.S. agriculture. Proposals are expected to contribute to long-term agricultural sustainability by focusing on issues such as improving crop and livestock productivity, enhancing food safety, addressing environmental challenges, and supporting rural economies. Projects that integrate research, education, and extension activities are particularly encouraged, as they are expected to provide more comprehensive and applicable outcomes. The program is open to a wide range of applicants, including academic institutions, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations, fostering collaboration and innovation across different sectors. Eligible projects can span from basic scientific research to applied projects that directly benefit producers and consumers. The AFRI FAS program provides funding for both short-term exploratory studies and longer-term research initiatives. Successful proposals should demonstrate potential for significant impact on agricultural practices, policies, or technologies, and must be aligned with USDA's strategic goals to improve agricultural productivity and food security. The application process includes specific requirements for proposal submission, including detailed project descriptions, budgets, and timelines. Applicants must adhere to guidelines set forth by the program, which also includes deadlines for submission. Evaluation criteria focus on the scientific merit of the proposal, its relevance to program goals, and the potential for successful implementation and dissemination of results. In summary, the AFRI Foundational and Applied Science Program provides an important opportunity for advancing agricultural research and education. By addressing key challenges in food production, resource management, and rural development, the program seeks to ensure the long-term sustainability and competitiveness of U.S. agriculture.
