Newport Community Grants
This funding opportunity supports nonprofit organizations in Newport, Rhode Island, that provide impactful services to low- and moderate-income residents, focusing on community well-being, economic development, and cultural enrichment.
The City of Newport administers two key community-focused funding programs through its Grants Office—the Civic Support Grant Program and the Special Projects Grant Program. These initiatives are designed to enhance the quality of life for Newport residents by supporting mission-driven organizations that provide measurable impact, especially those serving low- and moderate-income individuals and families. Emphasizing transparency, accountability, and equity, the City prioritizes strategic investments that contribute to economic development, public health, arts and culture, recreation, and community well-being. Funding is provided annually, contingent on City Council approval and availability of funds. Grants are open to 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations that are based in or primarily serve the residents of Newport, Rhode Island. To qualify, applicants must present an IRS 501(c)(3) determination letter, a certificate of good standing from the Rhode Island Secretary of State, current board roster with terms and affiliations, and appropriate financial statements. Organizations with operating budgets over $500,000 must submit audited financials, while those under this threshold must submit a financial review or compilation. Applicants must not be for-profit businesses, educational institutions, or entities with delinquent past grant reports. The application process includes submitting proposals through an online portal, which opens November 13, 2025. All applications are due by 4 PM on December 5, 2025. An informational webinar is scheduled for November 6, 2025, to guide applicants. Evaluation of proposals begins with a staff review and proceeds to a peer panel consisting of professionals from relevant City departments and community sectors. This panel assesses submissions based on a rubric and forwards recommendations to the City’s Resilience & Sustainability office, which then submits them to the City Council for review and possible revision. Following the adoption of the final City budget in June 2026, award notifications will be mailed by July 7, 2026. Funds are expected to be disbursed in July or August 2026. The performance period for funded activities spans from July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2027. Interim progress reports are due December 1, 2026, and final reports must be submitted by July 31, 2027. Evaluation criteria include alignment with City priorities, clarity of SMART goals, and demonstration of impact. The grant process is part of a broader digital strategy aimed at modernizing civic engagement and resource allocation. For questions, applicants are directed to contact Grants Officer Peter Bramante at (401) 845-5312 or pbramante@newportri.gov. The City emphasizes nondiscrimination and encourages applications from organizations that reflect Newport’s diversity and promote inclusive service delivery.
