The Richard A. Shaw Fund was created to honor the enduring legacy of Richard A. Shaw, a lifelong educator and nature enthusiast who dedicated his career to teaching in Nebraska’s public school system. In recognition of his commitment to education and the natural world, the Omaha Community Foundation established this fund to support nonprofit and public school programs that reflect Shaw’s core values.
The fund supports public school programs focusing on history, the natural sciences, and outdoor education. Eligible applicants include public schools or school systems serving students aged 5–18. Additionally, nonprofit organizations that benefit animals, especially those involving equine therapy, are also eligible to apply. Religious and private educational institutions are explicitly excluded from consideration, and organizations must be located within the Omaha metropolitan area, which includes Douglas, Sarpy, and Pottawattamie counties.
The fund offers up to $3,500 annually, divided into a maximum of two awards. Grant dollars are limited strictly to programming and project costs and may not be used for operating expenses. Applications are accepted only through the Omaha Community Foundation’s online portal.
Applications for the Richard A. Shaw Fund open on June 1 and close on July 15 each year. Awards are announced via email in September. Organizations may reapply annually if they continue to meet eligibility criteria. The grant is not rolling but is recurring each year.
All applicants must comply with the foundation’s non-discrimination clause, affirming inclusive hiring practices and service provision. For questions, applicants may contact Laura Contreras, Senior Program Manager, at laura@omahafoundation.org or 402-884-0792.
