Grant Description

The Treacy Foundation is a private philanthropic organization based in Helena, Montana, with a mission to support charitable initiatives that align with its funding priorities. The Foundation operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit entity and focuses its grantmaking within the state of Montana. Its funding approach emphasizes support for capital campaigns, capital asset improvements, and maintenance projects that demonstrate strong planning, community benefit, and organizational capacity. The Foundation has a history of aiding various nonprofit organizations across Montana to strengthen infrastructure and enhance long-term service delivery. The purpose of the Treacy Foundation's grant program is to provide financial support for projects that require significant investment in physical assets or facilities. This includes new construction, renovation, repairs, and other capital improvements that contribute to the sustainability and effectiveness of charitable organizations. While grants can be awarded for a variety of capital needs, the Foundation explicitly excludes funding for operating expenses, salaries, travel, meals, political activities, non-charitable organizations, grants or loans to individuals, debt reduction, electronics, vehicles, and projects where the applicant does not own the property involved. The Foundation accepts applications from eligible organizations within Montana. Grants of $10,000 or less are considered on an ongoing basis but must address emergency situations. Requests exceeding $10,000 must adhere to the Foundation’s grant cycle, with the current cycle’s submission deadline set for October 6, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. The Foundation generally operates four grant periods each year. Before submitting a full grant application, applicants must first provide a one-page Letter of Intent containing specific information, including contact details, a brief project description, IRS status, total project cost, requested amount, funds on hand with sources, and other funding applied for. For requests over $10,000, the Letter of Intent must be received at least three weeks prior to the application deadline. Once a Letter of Intent is reviewed, the Foundation will determine if the applicant is invited to submit a full application. Applications must be typed or electronically prepared and must include a budget showing total project costs, funds raised, outstanding funding requests, and any remaining funding needs. The Foundation requires that at least 50% of the project cost be secured or committed before application submission. This threshold is intended to demonstrate project viability and does not imply that the Foundation will fund the remaining 50%. Financial statements must be provided, including a recent balance sheet and income statement, ideally with a comparison to the same period in the prior year. A current IRS 501(c)(3) determination letter is required, or a public entity verification letter for governmental applicants. Letters of Intent and applications can be submitted via email to director@treacyfoundation.org or mailed to the Foundation’s P.O. Box in Helena. Applicants are encouraged to contact the Foundation at 406-443-3549 with any questions. The grant review process emphasizes alignment with funding priorities, demonstrated financial readiness, and the potential for lasting impact. While specific award amounts for individual grants or total funding pools are not disclosed, the Foundation’s ongoing cycles and structured process suggest a sustained commitment to Montana-based capital projects. The Treacy Foundation’s approach reflects a balance between responsiveness to urgent needs and structured funding cycles for larger projects. Its requirement for substantial matching funds underscores a focus on leveraging its resources to support well-prepared projects that already have strong community backing. By targeting capital needs, the Foundation aims to strengthen the operational capacity and physical infrastructure of nonprofit organizations across Montana.
