Frederick S. Upton Foundation Big Idea Grant
This funding opportunity provides financial support to nonprofit organizations in Berrien County, Michigan, for innovative projects that address community needs and improve residents' quality of life.
The Frederick S. Upton Foundation Big Idea Grant is a distinctive funding opportunity designed to inspire innovation and long-term community impact within Berrien County, Michigan. Administered through the Berrien Community Foundation, the grant aligns with the philanthropic mission of the Frederick S. Upton Foundation, which was founded in 1954 by Frederick Stanley Upton, a co-founder of the Whirlpool Corporation, along with his family. The Foundation honors his legacy of hard work, community devotion, and giving by supporting initiatives that improve quality of life through economic and cultural enrichment. Each year, the Big Idea Grant awards two grants: one in the amount of $50,000 and another for $25,000. These grants are intended to support bold, visionary projects from nonprofit organizations that aim to significantly benefit the residents of Berrien County. The program encourages applicants to think expansively and creatively about how to create sustainable, positive change. Projects may involve new programs or fresh approaches to expanding existing ones. Collaborative efforts among multiple agencies are highly encouraged, and projects must demonstrate innovation, a vision for long-term impact, and community transformation. The funding is not intended for capital building projects and is separate from the Foundation’s regular grant cycle. Additionally, past recipients of the Big Idea Grant must wait three years before reapplying. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, schools, religious organizations conducting community work, and government agencies. All applicants must demonstrate how their proposed idea will measurably improve life in the region and present a clear strategy for long-term sustainability. The application process for the Big Idea Grant begins with the submission of a Letter of Intent (LOI) by April 1, 2026. The letter, which must be no more than three double-spaced pages, should include an overview of the project, the contact person’s name, phone number, email, and mailing address. It must also explain the purpose of the project, the community benefit, the number of individuals expected to be served, the requesting agency’s background, and the grant amount requested. The LOI is submitted online via the Berrien Community Foundation's portal. Upon review of LOIs, selected organizations will be invited to submit a full proposal by June 1, 2026. During this second phase, agencies will be required to submit financial documentation and may be asked to give a brief presentation to the Foundation’s Associate Board of Trustees during the July 4 holiday weekend. Awards will be announced shortly thereafter, and funding will be disbursed starting August 1, 2026. Projects may extend beyond one year; however, a performance evaluation will be required at the one-year mark. Applicants may seek further information by contacting the Upton Foundation at [email protected] or by calling 269-983-3304.
