Grant Description

The 2027–2029 Safety Net Funding Cycle is administered by the United Way of Greater St. Louis, a regional nonprofit organization focused on uniting resources to help people live their best possible lives. With a longstanding presence in the Missouri-Illinois region, the United Way equips local nonprofits with critical funding and training to address community needs. Its Safety Net program supports a collaborative network of agencies that deliver direct services across five key impact areas: basic needs, community stability and crisis response, early childhood and youth success, health and well-being, and jobs and financial mobility. The initiative ensures that community members facing instability have access to essential services like food, housing, healthcare, and workforce resources. The Safety Net Funding Cycle is open to nonprofit organizations serving at least one of the 16 counties within United Way’s footprint across Missouri and Illinois. This funding opportunity offers selected agencies a three-year contract, with awards ranging from $50,000 to $1,500,000. New applicants are eligible for awards between $50,000 and $100,000. Notably, funding awards may not exceed 20% of the programmatic budget for which funding is requested. Organizations that join the Safety Net network become official United Way member agencies and must adhere to requirements such as conducting annual workplace campaigns, co-branding, submitting impact reports, participating in site visits, and maintaining accurate program listings in the 211 directory. Applications must be submitted through United Way’s online grants portal by April 17, 2026, at 5:00 PM Central Time. Applicants are required to complete a detailed organizational profile and upload several supporting documents, including IRS nonprofit determination letters, financial audits or compilations, board rosters, and various internal policies. New applicants are also encouraged to attend one of two informational webinars scheduled on March 24 and March 26, 2026, as well as optional virtual office hours on March 27, 2026. The application process is designed to assess an agency’s organizational health, program effectiveness, community alignment, and capacity to achieve measurable outcomes. Evaluation of submitted applications will be conducted by United Way’s Regional Investment Committee, with funding recommendations based on performance, alignment with impact areas, and adherence to eligibility requirements. Agencies must have operated for at least two years prior to submission and maintain good standing with the states of Missouri or Illinois. They must also demonstrate sound financial practices through audited statements or, for smaller organizations, a combination of tax filings and third-party compilations. Award decisions will be announced the week of June 29, 2026, and final funding decisions made by December 16, 2026. Organizations selected for funding will enter into a multi-year partnership with United Way, enabling them to receive financial support, participate in a collaborative peer network, and align with regional strategies for long-term community impact. Participating agencies are expected to engage in ongoing quality improvement, performance measurement, and service delivery refinement throughout the three-year term. This funding cycle underscores United Way of Greater St. Louis’ commitment to fostering community resilience and addressing systemic inequities through sustained nonprofit partnerships. It invites eligible nonprofits—regardless of prior funding history—to apply and contribute to a regional ecosystem of support for individuals and families striving toward stability and self-sufficiency.
