Artist Project Grant 2026
This grant provides financial support to individual artists residing in Maine to create new work, enhance their skills, and engage with public audiences through various artistic projects.
The Artist Project Grant offered by the Maine Arts Commission is designed to support individual artists residing in Maine across all disciplines and career stages. This program seeks to foster artistic growth, enhance the quality and impact of artistic work, and promote professional development. Eligible artists can pursue projects that are realistic, goal-oriented, and align with the performance period between July 1, 2026, and June 30, 2027. The grant allows artists to engage in new work, expand their skillsets, and invest in opportunities that advance their creative careers. This funding opportunity provides support for a wide range of activities that may include purchasing materials or equipment (with some limitations), producing or installing work, preparing for exhibitions or tours, attending skill-building workshops or trainings, participating in residencies, or hiring assistants or collaborators. The maximum grant award is up to $2,500, and while there is no matching requirement, applicants must be able to demonstrate a feasible and impactful use of the funds that aligns with their artistic and professional goals. To be eligible, applicants must be practicing artists who are current residents of Maine and at least 18 years of age by the application deadline. Additionally, past recipients must have submitted all required final reports for prior funding from the Maine Arts Commission. All proposed activities must comply with U.S. laws and public policy, including protections for free speech, religious liberty, environmental concerns, and anti-discrimination mandates. Certain uses are explicitly prohibited, such as debt repayment, high-cost equipment purchases, political activities, or credit-bearing educational work. Applications must be submitted through the Maine Cultural Access Portal by 5:00 p.m. on March 30, 2026, with the portal opening on February 25, 2026. Applicants are encouraged to begin early and reach out for support if needed. Required components include responses to four narrative questions (about the artist, the project, timeline, and goals), a completed budget form covering both grant and in-kind contributions, and five work samples in supported digital formats. Submission of these materials must adhere strictly to the technical file guidelines set by the commission. Evaluation of proposals is based on a competitive review process. A panel of arts and culture professionals will score submissions across four weighted criteria: project feasibility (30%), impact on the artist's work and goals (40%), budget realism (10%), and artistic merit and commitment to practice (20%). All applicants will be notified by email of the outcome, and awarded funds may be used to reimburse costs incurred during the eligible performance window. Final reports are mandatory and due within 14 days of the fiscal year end. For assistance, artists may contact Eli Cabañas, Grants and Website Manager, via email at [email protected] or phone at 207-215-5872. Accessibility accommodations are available, and the program is inclusive and open to all eligible individuals regardless of disability. Further guidelines are provided via an official PDF, and the Maine Arts Commission encourages early engagement and adherence to the application protocols to ensure competitiveness and eligibility.
