Façade Improvement Grant
This program provides financial support to businesses and property owners in downtown Cape Girardeau for improving the exterior appearance of their commercial buildings.
Old Town Cape, a recognized Main Street America™ and Missouri Main Street Accredited program, has launched the Façade Improvement Grant to enhance the visual appeal and economic vitality of Downtown Cape Girardeau. This initiative reflects Old Town Cape's mission of preservation-based economic development and community pride by supporting projects that restore and improve the public-facing aspects of commercial buildings within the district. The grant specifically targets building enhancements that reinforce the district's historic character, promote foot traffic, and improve the pedestrian experience. The Façade Improvement Grant provides matching funds of up to $1,500 for eligible improvements. The total amount available for this program is $7,500, and awards are based on the project's location, the impact on the community, and the financial commitment from the applicant. Eligible improvements include awnings, signage, walls, doors, windows, and exterior lighting on storefronts. Projects must be completed by the end of the calendar year in which the grant is awarded. Applicants must obtain all necessary city permits and approvals before beginning construction to remain eligible for reimbursement. Applicants must be either a business owner or property owner within the Old Town Cape district. If the applicant is a tenant, written consent from the property owner is required. Only one application is permitted per business or property space. Projects must not begin until the Old Town Cape Design Committee has approved the application. All work and associated costs must be incurred post-approval to qualify for reimbursement. The application process requires submission of several documents, including city permits, proposed designs with cost estimates, owner's consent (if applicable), and optional photos of the current façade. Upon project completion, applicants must submit final itemized invoices and proof of payment to receive reimbursement. A site visit will be conducted by the committee to verify the project's completion and adherence to guidelines. Reimbursement will be issued within 30 days following this review. The application deadline for the 2025 cycle was August 1, 2025. The program is expected to recur annually, with the next round anticipated to open in August 2026. Applications may be submitted electronically or by mail to Old Town Cape’s office. Inquiries can be directed to Creative Director Tori Holmes via email at [email protected] or by phone at 573-334-8085. The review process is conducted by the Old Town Cape Design Committee, which evaluates submissions for alignment with the grant’s objectives and prioritizes projects that offer high community impact. Funding decisions are made within two weeks of the application deadline. Extensions for project completion may be granted upon written request, provided it is received before the year ends.
