Ideas Fund
This funding opportunity provides financial support to nonprofit organizations in specific global regions for innovative projects that enhance financial capability, promote fair employment, and foster environmental sustainability in their communities.
The Empowering Partnerships: Ideas Fund is a global philanthropic initiative administered by the Aberdeen Group Charitable Trust, a registered Scotland-based charity. This fund is designed to empower nonprofit organizations by providing critical early-stage funding for pilot initiatives that develop sustainable solutions to persistent social and environmental challenges. Rooted in the Aberdeen Group’s broader Empowering Futures strategy, the Ideas Fund emphasizes building financial capability, promoting fair employment opportunities, and fostering environmental sustainability as key pillars for thriving communities. The Trust operates with an active, values-aligned funding philosophy and is committed to collaborative partnerships that catalyze tangible and lasting social impact. The Ideas Fund invites applications from nonprofit organizations with an annual income of less than £3 million that are headquartered and registered within eligible regions—specifically the Americas, the Asia-Pacific region (APAC), Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), and the United Kingdom. Within these regions, project implementation must be located in or near cities where Aberdeen Group maintains a significant office presence, such as Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Bangkok, Paris, Frankfurt, Luxembourg, Edinburgh, London, Glasgow, Leeds, and Manchester. Projects must also align directly with one or more of the Trust’s three priority areas: financial capability, employability, and the role of nature in supporting community wellbeing and economic resilience. Grants typically range from £20,000 to £80,000 (or local currency equivalent), supporting pilot efforts over a maximum period of 18 months. While requests for higher amounts may be considered, they require a compelling case. Funding is available exclusively for new, innovative, and practical projects that aim to provide frontline services and address the interconnected root causes of systemic issues. Projects must demonstrate potential for scalability or replication and the ability to generate insights that can inform broader social change. Collaborative proposals between organizations are welcomed, provided there is a clearly designated lead applicant and an articulated rationale for the partnership. Certain limitations apply. The fund does not support core organizational costs, capital improvements, existing projects, individuals, statutory or for-profit bodies, religious or political organizations, or those primarily focused on research, advocacy, or policy work. However, evolving or extended versions of previously implemented initiatives may be considered if the application clearly distinguishes the proposed work as innovative and beyond "business as usual." Staff roles may be included in budgets only where there is evidence of employment sustainability beyond the grant period. The application process is designed for efficiency and equity. Eligible organizations must complete the standard application form provided on the Aberdeen Group Charitable Trust’s website and submit it via email to [email protected] by the stated deadline. Applications are reviewed against predefined criteria, and applicants are notified of the outcome within four weeks after the deadline. While the Trust endeavors to respond to all queries submitted by email, its limited capacity means that individual pre-application consultations and feedback for declined proposals are generally unavailable. Funded partners are expected to maintain light-touch but collaborative relationships with the Trust, participating in periodic virtual meetings and submitting a final impact data form to measure outcomes. Site visits may also occur. The Trust values transparency, learning, and impact, and prioritizes trust-based relationships that respect the expertise and autonomy of the funded organizations.
