Academic Development Grants
This funding opportunity supports universities and academic institutions in advancing high-level Buddhist studies and research programs, encouraging collaboration and outreach initiatives.
The Academic Development Grants program supports the advancement of rigorous academic Buddhist studies within university and graduate institutions. This initiative is grounded in the belief that authentic scholarship on Buddhism—once confined to monasteries and dharma centers in Asia—is now flourishing at global academic institutions. To maintain and elevate this momentum, the program seeks to support departments, programs, and outreach efforts that are intellectually engaged, grounded in Buddhist traditions, and capable of exploring Buddhism’s evolving role in the modern world. These grants are open to accredited universities and academic institutions seeking to enhance Buddhist studies. Eligible proposals include initiatives that strengthen teaching and research in Buddhism, expand outreach to students and communities, or promote institutional collaboration in the sponsorship of Buddhist academic programming. The program encourages institutional co-sponsorship or matching contributions from universities or external benefactors, highlighting a shared commitment to sustaining high-quality academic work. Applications from individuals are not accepted. In addition, proposals for participation in or organization of conferences, construction projects, or administrative expenses such as indirect costs and overhead are not eligible for funding under this program. Only academic institutions or academic units within institutions may apply. Each calendar year includes two grant cycles. The first submission window is open from March 15 to June 15, with notifications sent in November and funding released in January of the following year. The second submission window runs from September 15 to December 15, with notifications issued the following May and funds disbursed in July. All deadlines close at 23:59 Eastern Standard Time on the respective deadline date, and late submissions are not accepted. Applicants must complete a two-step submission process consisting of an Indication of Interest form followed, upon approval, by a full Grant Application. Early submission of the Indication of Interest is strongly advised. This approach ensures timely feedback and allows applicants to strengthen their proposals before submitting the final application.
