Grant Description

Jazz Road Tours is a grant initiative spearheaded by South Arts, a regional arts nonprofit based in the Southern United States. As a national program, Jazz Road supports U.S.-based jazz artists in expanding their reach through touring and residency opportunities that aim to foster deeper community engagement and career development. The initiative is rooted in the cultural tradition of jazz as a conduit for human connection, particularly in underrepresented and rural areas. Jazz Road is structured around two primary grant pathways: Jazz Road Tours and Jazz Road Creative Residencies, each recurring on a regular cycle. For the January 2026 cycle, Jazz Road Tours has introduced a distinctive focus on rural communities across the United States. This cycle will take a curatorial approach, with South Arts collaborating directly with artists to design meaningful and regionally impactful tours. Artists are encouraged to submit Letters of Interest (LOIs) if they are based in or have personal, cultural, or familial ties to rural or underserved communities. This initial LOI phase runs from February 10 through March 10. Based on these submissions, selected applicants will be invited to submit full applications between March 23 and April 15. The grants awarded through Jazz Road Tours provide financial assistance of up to $15,000 to cover touring expenses. Additionally, up to $2,500 may be used specifically for non-musician personnel costs, including a newly approved expense—childcare. The grant prioritizes artists' ability to retain creative control over their engagements and aims to create equitable structures that support sustainable careers in jazz. Allowable expenses span a wide range of touring-related costs, and South Arts provides detailed guidelines to assist applicants in shaping their proposals. Eligibility for the program is focused on individual artists, artist-led nonprofit organizations, or artist-led corporations. Artists must be professional jazz musicians, U.S. citizens or permanent residents, aged 18 or older, and not currently enrolled as full-time students. Further restrictions include disqualification for individuals with felony convictions or outstanding child support obligations. Applications require submission of at least three work samples, artist biography, ensemble information, and a reference from a venue outside the artist's home region. These materials should align closely with the proposed touring configuration and reflect the artist’s current creative output. The review process includes both LOI and full application stages. LOIs will be assessed for the artist’s connection to the target community, artistic alignment, and potential for social or cultural impact. Invited applications are reviewed by a panel of jazz field experts on similar criteria, with an additional focus on artistic quality, authenticity, and logistical readiness. The process culminates in award notifications scheduled for early May 2026. All applications must be submitted via South Arts’ online Salesforce platform. Artists are advised to register early and become familiar with the system before submitting their materials. Selected grantees are responsible for managing all tour logistics and financial reporting. Award letters will detail the disbursement schedule and compliance expectations. South Arts emphasizes a commitment to fair artist compensation and supports touring in a wide array of venues including traditional spaces, educational institutions, houses of worship, and unconventional community locations.
