The Crohn's & Colitis Foundation’s Student Research Fellowship Awards provide financial support to undergraduate, medical, and graduate students in the United States to engage in full-time research related to Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. This program aims to foster interest in IBD-related research by funding student researchers for at least ten weeks of dedicated investigation under qualified mentorship.
Applicants must be enrolled in accredited U.S. institutions and not yet engaged in thesis research. Candidates may not hold concurrent salary support from other funding agencies. Eligible students include those at the undergraduate, medical, or graduate level, provided they are not already supported by similar funding mechanisms. The research must be conducted under the supervision of a faculty mentor who directs an IBD-relevant project at an accredited institution. Mentors must not be related to the applicant or be working within their lab.
Each fellowship award offers up to $2,500 in a one-time payment, made directly to the student’s institution. A total of up to sixteen awards may be granted annually. Following completion of the research, recipients must submit a complete financial statement and a scientific report by September 1 of the award year. Any publications resulting from the research must acknowledge the Foundation’s support. Failure to meet these post-award obligations disqualifies recipients from future funding through the Foundation.
Applications are submitted via the Proposal Central online platform. The application deadline for the Spring/Summer 2026 cycle is March 31, 2026, at 11:59 PM EST. Submitted applications will be reviewed during April and May, with award decisions announced in mid to late June. Questions related to the application process may be directed to N'Dea Johnson, while post-award inquiries can be sent to postaward@crohnscolitisfoundation.org.
Through this initiative, the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation continues its commitment to nurturing the next generation of researchers in the field of IBD by offering a structured opportunity for early-career scientists to gain valuable research experience.
Ensure mentor is unrelated and not from applicant’s lab. Maintain focus on IBD relevance and submit all materials via Proposal Central.
